Funny story about Intuit Mailchimp and Shopify . . . Years ago Shopify flew me up to toronto to do a 2 day email marketing supercourse. I did tons of content, all about how to do lifecycle marketing on Mailchimp. Win-backs, ACs, how to sync with Shopify, mine your customer data, etc etc. Lots of screenshares showing step by step how to do things. Literally one day after returning to NYC, Gwen Aussem from Shopify calls telling me that they had a falling out with Mailchimp and kicked it off the platform. They would have to edit my course down to remove Mailchimp references. I'm like "The class was 90% Mailchimp." Gwen (trying to sound upbeat): "Yup . . .we can make it work." So they went live with the remnants which was my face to camera talking about email for about 45 min. It still did turn out OK! A credit to the editors I guess. I loved the experience and working with Gwen Aussem and Jonah Wolfraim! But gave me a funny story about being an unknown casualty in a much more strategic war between these two giants.
“Pioneers get an arrow in the back, and followers prosper.” This is exactly what’s played out in the Shopify app space. Intuit Mailchimp was the OG email provider. -> Klaviyo builds the Shopify version. Now has 6x+ their market Plus share. For Everyone who’s old enough to remember, Reviews was actually first. Bazaarvoice was the first big Reviews provider. Yotpo was originally the low cost Shopify alt. (Then came Stamped, Judge.me, & Okendo) SMSBump (now Yotpo SMS) was the first big SMS provider in the space. -> Attentive/Klaviyo dominate the market with more funding + distribution. And it doesn’t stop there: Smile.io → S'well Rewards (Now Yotpo Rewards) Recurly → Recharge Zendesk → Gorgias Returnly → Loop Dynamic Yield by Mastercard -> Rebuy Engine Creating the Shopify specific version of a software started as simplifying installation. Most of you don’t remember having to update Liquid code to install apps. Now, it’s become its own ecosystem with rich feature sets. Where you: 1) Tailor a common use case to the Shopify tech stack. 2) Make it codeless to install + run. 3) Build the entire biz around Shopify. No one is really worried about what is happening on Woo, BigC or Magentoy anymore. The Shopify app ecosystem has become so big it’s become its own universe. #shopify
Talk about timing! At least you got to showcase your face-time skills, right?
Okay this was a fun read. The timing 🤣🫠. We could make it work… because YOU were teaching! Your teaching style and strategies transcend a pesky SaaS clash. Thank you Drew!!
Klaviyo should have flown you back up to reshoot the screenshots and reference.
Haha, that’s hilarious.
What a plot twist! 😄 It's amazing how things unfold sometimes.

6moYour attitude saved us. Academy was early days and it was definitely a risk we had planned for. That said, management was getting cold feet and almost didn’t invest further. Gwen made the call, you were super supportive, and we kept going to reach 1m entrepreneurs. That moment was a serious tipping point.
