What is an elevator pitch? How do I create one? ✨An elevator pitch is a brief introduction and description of yourself and your top skills. You want it to be the length of an elevator ride (30-60 seconds), hence the name. Here, you can introduce yourself, your career goals and what you consider your most valuable skills. To create an elevator pitch, start by saying your name, your class standing or expected graduation date. After the introduction, highlight your job experience and skills you learned throughout those jobs that you deem most important. Be sure to share your values in the workplace and what you would bring to the table for the company. This is your sign that the job market IS still viable-- and to go to that career fair even if you're nervous! Last month, on September 12th, I attended my first career fair at Florida Atlantic University as a senior. I was always too nervous to attend during my junior year. This time, however, I pushed past my anxiety and put on my best suit for the Florida Atlantic Career Fair. Two weeks before attending, I went to the career center to perfect my resume and interview skills and attended several informative sessions leading up to the big day. On the day of, I spoke with over 35 employers and handed out 25+ copies of my resume throughout the fair. As a first-generation student, I was nervous about being able to land a position after my graduation, so this career fair was extremely important to me. In the weeks after, I landed 5 phone interviews. This evening, I received an email that I was selected to start a second-round interview with a Fortune 500 company! Thank you so much to Florida Atlantic University - College of Business and the Florida Atlantic Career Center for preparing me professionally (and emotionally!) for this career fair. Throughout my 2 years at this university, I have felt truly cared for by my advisors and my professors. A special thank you to Eileen Acello and Prisca Paul for constantly sharing internship opportunities for students at Florida Atlantic University! I am motivated daily to continue my search for a post-graduate career by seeing your success and commitment to the student career search. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to see where it leads me! My advice: (1) Prepare your resume. This is your first impression with an employer and what they have after you leave. (2) Go to career and job fairs. It's no secret that this job market is tough, so speaking with employers face-to-face puts you miles ahead of the competition. (3) Be confident! Start your interaction with a firm handshake and eye contact. Give your elevator pitch and have a casual conversation with the representative. Attending career fairs (even when you feel inexperienced) is the best decision you can make if you're looking to get a foot in the door to finding your career. I wish I had started attending early on, from freshman year, instead of waiting to get through more coursework. At the time it felt like I didn't have enough experience under my belt, but most recruiters aren't expecting you to have 15 years of experience or have your own startup already. They're looking for potential and passion in the field, and that's something we as students have in abundance. Even if you've barely started your degree, going to a career fair just to get familiar with how they work is invaluable experience. The first thing I learned from attending my first career fair was that showing interest in the job is the key. Showing interest in the company ends up getting the recruiters to just talk about the company, but interest in the job/position itself gives you important information as well as space to ask good, specific questions. The second thing I learned is the value of knowing how to talk about yourself. listing off accomplishments gives a totally different message than actually talking about yourself to someone to let them get to know you. Telling a story of how you got to where you are now, what you've learned along the way, and where you're hoping to go gives an interesting, memorable, and complete image of yourself to the person you're talking to. Straight up listing skills and accomplishments feels like you're narrating the resume they're already holding in their hands. I hope to be able to adapt these lessons into my preparation for future career fairs and opportunities, and I'm less nervous and more excited to put myself out there.

I often discuss the key strategies for navigating RecruitMilitary job fairs effectively. But these strategies aren't exclusive to our events; they're universal. Let me share how my daughter applied these at a Virginia Tech career fair during her junior year. #1 - Research Organizations: She identified the companies attending and researched them thoroughly. Understanding what they do and their employee needs helped her focus on the most relevant opportunities. #2 - Craft Your Story: Recruiters always ask, "Tell me about yourself." My daughter prepared a concise narrative about her studies and career aspirations, peppered with anecdotes to highlight her strengths. #3 - Keep an Open Mind: While she had her top five companies in mind, I advised her to engage with as many as possible. Every conversation can be a revelation or a learning moment. #4 - Follow Up Post-Fair: The journey doesn't end at the fair. My daughter followed up with her top choices, leading to a summer internship and eventually a full-time job offer from her preferred company. There’s another powerful lesson from my daughter’s career fair story: Some of her classmates had a completely different experience. They showed up unprepared and had no success. The contrasting experience of my daughter and her friends underscores a vital point: Career fairs are what you make of them. Dedicate time to these best practices, and you'll maximize your chances of success during and after the fair.

It's Career Fair week! The Super Bowl event in the land of Talent Acquisition. I have curated many career fairs, but none with this much anticipation. With over 1200 registrations, this year is shaping up to be the biggest one yet! How exciting? Very! I made a promise.
