🌍 Understanding Migration Narratives: A New Approach to Inclusive Policy-Making Migration stories shape how we see the world—and how policies are made. But who tells these stories matters. In our latest paper as part of the Horizon Europe FAIR Return project, we explore two types of migration narratives: those told by migrants and those told about them by media, policymakers, and others. When these perspectives align or diverge, they influence critical areas like return, readmission, and reintegration policies. 🔎 Our analysis revealed that narratives by migrants often focus on personal challenges and motivations, highlighting resilience and the struggle for dignity. In contrast, narratives about migrants, often framed by external parties, emphasise security, economic impacts, or cultural integration. 🤝 Bridging these gaps is essential for more inclusive policies that prioritise humane return processes and successful reintegration efforts. Policies shaped by both perspectives can create systems that better support migrants' rights and development, while addressing broader societal concerns. This paper highlights how including migrant voices in policy conversations leads to more humane and inclusive decisions. 📜 Want to learn more about how these narratives shape policy? Read on to find out how we can build better migration frameworks by focusing on those who experience it firsthand. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eFBmTP8U https://lnkd.in/eGmtXwGd

Toward a More Inclusive Migration Policy in Europe: Strategies for Change In the face of restrictive migration policies in Europe, it is crucial for us—individuals, organizations, and governments—to adopt comprehensive strategies to foster more inclusive environments for migrants and refugees. Here are actionable steps we can take to make a significant impact: Advocate for Change: Engage directly with policymakers to discuss the positive impacts of inclusive migration policies. Support politicians who stand for fair migration laws. Raise Public Awareness: Launch educational initiatives to highlight the challenges migrants face and their contributions to our societies. Use media to share personal stories that build empathy and understanding. Pursue Legal Reforms: Challenge restrictive policies through litigation and promote adherence to international human rights standards. Promote Economic Benefits: Demonstrate the economic advantages of welcoming migrants, and encourage the business community to advocate for progressive policies. Empower Migrants: Support initiatives that help migrants advocate for their own rights and provide them with necessary legal aid. Build Strong Coalitions: Form coalitions with NGOs, faith groups, labor unions, and academia to amplify our voice and impact. Enhance International Cooperation: Encourage dialogues and cooperation between countries to harmonize migration policies across Europe. We must work collaboratively to create policies that not only respect the rights of migrants but also enrich our communities. Join us in pushing for a world that values and protects everyone, regardless of where they come from. #MigrationReform #InclusivePolicy #HumanRights

On 25 and 26 June, the European Migration Network (EMN) Conference intends to present the work done by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency to operationalise and implement the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, while, at the same time, launching the debate on the upcoming steps to make the New Pact a reality. The New Pact on Migration and Asylum constitutes a set of regulations and policies to establish a new migration and asylum process for the European Union (EU). After the adoption of the Pact in April 2024, marking the conclusion of the legislative process, the focus has turned to the implementation and operationalisation of the new legislation. The European Migration Network (EMN), which is coordinated by the European Commission, provides up-to-date, objective, reliable, and comparable information on migration and asylum to support policy-making in the European Union, and its observer countries. The Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU is therefore a unique opportunity to highlight the work of the EMN, to bring together key stakeholders and to open public dialogue on the Pact. #EU2024BE 🇪🇺🇧🇪 Nicole de Moor European Migration Network (EMN) Belgium

Such an important piece on understanding the damage that current narratives on migration cause. Instead of seeing migrants and refugees as threats or victims, an approach seeing them as humans should be developed. Migrants and refugees deserve the same human rights as everyone else, and this is clearly not respected in the new European Pact on Migration. #refugeeswelcome

I am honored to announce the publication of my latest article in the Revista de Iniciação Científica em Relações Internacionais, hosted by the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, titled "The Paradigms of the EU New Pact on Migration and Asylum". The article examines key aspects of the European Union's new Migration and Asylum Pact, its objectives, and its implications for human rights. The full text is available at: https://lnkd.in/ekJMXJ4e Abstract: Due to world crises and economic difficulties, several migratory waves have occurred in recent years. One of the main destinations for migrants was Europe. Burden of responsibility, lack of resources on the part of the Member States that received these immigrants and refugees were some of the consequences that mass immigration caused. In this way, to migrate these problems, the European Union decided to establish a New Pact for Migration and Asylum, where it divided the responsibility among all Member States, seeking a better redistribution of obligations. None of the States of the European Union are obliged to be adherents of this new pact, as they all have their sovereignty, however, if they refuse, they will be financially penalized by the European bloc. The present work intends to approach the aspects that were established by this new pact and also to talk about the benefits and harms of the migratory waves. The research aims to describe the positive and negative aspects brought by the new law in order to understand if it is in accordance with the General Theory of Human Rights, as well as the challenges faced by the European Union regarding migration and asylum issues. As it is a recent law, the methodology of the work is exploratory, meaning there will not be an exact final conclusion on the subject, but rather the beginning of related research in the field.

ON MIGRANTS Migration has been a fundamental aspect of human history, driven by various factors such as seeking new opportunities, escaping persecution from oppression, or pursuing a better life. However, in modern times, concerns about national security, economic stability, and cultural preservation have outweighed the needs of people who feel hopeless. Historically, migrations are often driven by necessity and opportunity, while contemporary immigration policies aim to balance the needs of host societies. This involves considerations of infrastructure, resources, social cohesion, and legal frameworks. Ultimately, finding a balance between welcoming migrants and safeguarding national interests remains a complex challenge for governments and people worldwide. What is the fault of the modern migrants who cannot find a better life for themselves?

As the notion of 'super-#diversity' encourages researchers and states to understand migrants in novel ways, this working paper demonstrates that the so-called 'LADO-test' should be driven by an understanding of language as a spatio-temporal resource, not as a stable 'resource of origin'. #migration #migrationresearch
