Discover how #migration affects redistribution preferences in #LatinAmerica, including the impact of #Venezuelandisplacement on #Colombia. Research shows that migration has a significant effect on redistribution across the region, especially among high-income individuals and countries with higher public spending. Despite cultural similarities, migration suppresses the demand for #redistribution, driven by concerns like fiscal leakage and animosity towards migrants. Understanding these dynamics is crucial in shaping policy and fostering #inclusivesocieties in Latin America. Read more: https://bit.ly/3xeO1s6

🌍 Understanding Migration Narratives: A New Approach to Inclusive Policy-Making Migration stories shape how we see the world—and how policies are made. But who tells these stories matters. In our latest paper as part of the Horizon Europe FAIR Return project, we explore two types of migration narratives: those told by migrants and those told about them by media, policymakers, and others. When these perspectives align or diverge, they influence critical areas like return, readmission, and reintegration policies. 🔎 Our analysis revealed that narratives by migrants often focus on personal challenges and motivations, highlighting resilience and the struggle for dignity. In contrast, narratives about migrants, often framed by external parties, emphasise security, economic impacts, or cultural integration. 🤝 Bridging these gaps is essential for more inclusive policies that prioritise humane return processes and successful reintegration efforts. Policies shaped by both perspectives can create systems that better support migrants' rights and development, while addressing broader societal concerns. This paper highlights how including migrant voices in policy conversations leads to more humane and inclusive decisions. 📜 Want to learn more about how these narratives shape policy? Read on to find out how we can build better migration frameworks by focusing on those who experience it firsthand. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eFBmTP8U https://lnkd.in/eGmtXwGd

As the notion of 'super-#diversity' encourages researchers and states to understand migrants in novel ways, this working paper demonstrates that the so-called 'LADO-test' should be driven by an understanding of language as a spatio-temporal resource, not as a stable 'resource of origin'. #migration #migrationresearch

ON MIGRANTS Migration has been a fundamental aspect of human history, driven by various factors such as seeking new opportunities, escaping persecution from oppression, or pursuing a better life. However, in modern times, concerns about national security, economic stability, and cultural preservation have outweighed the needs of people who feel hopeless. Historically, migrations are often driven by necessity and opportunity, while contemporary immigration policies aim to balance the needs of host societies. This involves considerations of infrastructure, resources, social cohesion, and legal frameworks. Ultimately, finding a balance between welcoming migrants and safeguarding national interests remains a complex challenge for governments and people worldwide. What is the fault of the modern migrants who cannot find a better life for themselves?

In Roma Discussing Migration: The Journey from Africa to Italy The migration journey of many Africans seeking a new life in Italy is filled with complex stories, challenges, and aspirations. Historically, there are three main routes: the western corridor through Morocco, the eastern corridor through the Red Sea, and the central corridor from Libya to Sicily. The “Piano Mattei” is a key initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between Italy and African nations, addressing the root causes of migration through sustainable opportunities. As the daughter of immigrants, I’m committed to engaging in nuanced discussions about global immigration, striving for a balanced narrative that highlights both the challenges and contributions of migrants. Together, we can foster solidarity and understanding across borders. #Migration #AfricaToItaly #PianoMattei #CulturalDiversity #SocialImpact

This was one of the best panels I listened at Folkemødet .Which was focused on migration and Refugees.Which addressed on the complexities of migration, on a crucial standpoint by taking a stance to recognize the danger of a single story,. Migrants are often labeled as mere economic migrants or refugees without considering the multifaceted nature of their journeys. However, migration is not a problem, but a fundamental human instinct and desire for a better life and better opportunities. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk, "The Danger of a Single Story," highlights the importance of sharing diverse narratives. By focusing solely on the negative aspects of migration, we risk creating stereotypes and distorting realities. It's essential to acknowledge the various motivations and experiences of migrants, including those who make something out of their new lives. Let's strive to create a more inclusive narrative that recognizes the agency and resilience of migrants. By doing so, we can foster empathy, understanding, and a more compassionate society. #MigrationIsAHumanInstinct #TheDangerOfASingleStory #InclusiveNarrativesMatter TARIBA TRAORE

On #WorldRefugeeDay, we acknowledge the challenges faced by refugees and migrants worldwide. Our Migration: Living Well Together programme, developed in partnership with The Linbury Trust, engaged 29 Fellows in vital work to deepen understanding of migration in the UK. Their efforts culminated in a comprehensive report launched earlier this year, highlighting insights such as enhancing peer support networks, improving access to services for newcomers, and championing lived experience in decision-making.
