In ☕#1 of the CIO Café, leading up to the #NZCIOSummit, I connected with Ganesh Ahirao, former chair of the New Zealand Productivity Commission. Born and raised in Upper Hutt, Ganesh’s career journey taken him to Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL), the first economics consultancy in NZ. His professional odyssey spans over two decades at BERL. Ganesh’s early career was marked by his rapid ascent through the ranks, culminating in a leadership role where he focused on regional development and Māori economic opportunities. His core relationship was with the Federation of Māori Authorities (FOMA), he also worked with organisations such as Wakatū Incorporation, Wairarapa Moana & others. He enjoyed working with Hillmare Schulze. His work also encompassed consulting on regional development, reflecting his commitment to improving economic conditions across NZ. One of the toughest challenges he faced was making difficult decisions about restructuring. Despite finding layoffs very challenging, he always aimed to support affected individuals, ensuring they had good opportunities and career paths. The transition to the Productivity Commission marked a new chapter, moving from private to public sector consulting. During his three-year tenure, Ganesh led critical inquiries into the innovation ecosystem, long-term immigration settings, and the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage. His efforts focused on breaking cycles of disadvantage and boosting productivity through workforce training, R&D investment, and infrastructure development. Ganesh's contributions were supported by an impressive team, including directors Catherine Proffitt, Julian Wood and Philip Stevens, who's data-driven approach was crucial for initiatives like 'Productivity by the Numbers.' Integral team members like Shelley Catlin, and Commissioners Diane Ruwhiu (Ngāpuhi) and Gail Pacheco, were instrumental in driving forward these initiatives. He also worked with Bill Rosenberg. The disestablishment of the Commission by the incoming government was a significant blow. As before, main concern for Ganesh was to ensure that his team found new roles. Ganesh also developed great relationships with people like Donna Purdue and Traci Houpapa MNZM JP CFInstD, who are instrumental in his understanding of the economic landscape. Why Leaving the Comfort of Home Was the Best Decision We Made for Our Business (and Lives). In July, we took a leap – moving TNW Marketing from the UK all the way to Da Nang, Vietnam. Yeah, I know what you're thinking – “22 hours away to Asia? That’s a bit mental.” Here's the reality: getting out of the comfort zone you live in day to day is absolutely crucial for growth. Since moving, it’s been the BEST decision for both our business and personal lives. Here's why: - Deep, uninterrupted focus: We get 4 hours of solid work in every day before the UK even wakes up. This alone has helped us book 100+ calls a month and scale quickly. - Cost of living = freedom: Low expenses have allowed us to live fully, focus on our health, and reinvest in the business. The healthier we are, the better we operate – personally and professionally. - Growth: When we moved here, we had 1 employee. Now? We have 5. And we've been growing 70% month over month – I don’t think this would have happened if we stayed in our comfort zone. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows mind. Time zones have been tricky, especially as we scale in the US. Sales calls, team syncs, and opportunities start getting missed. That’s why we’ll likely be relocating next year. Still, living here has been a game changer. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re in a startup phase and want to grow quickly, get out of your normal zone. Whether it’s Asia or another part of the world, experiencing a new culture and environment might be the catalyst your business needs. The past year has seen a fascinating shift in the job market. Large corporations are downsizing, yet unemployment remains low and the economy is strong. The answer? A surge in start-up activity! A recent study reveals a staggering 80% increase in US start-up applications compared to the pre-pandemic decade (5.5 million in 2023!). Europe has also seen a 20% rise. Even more importantly, start-ups are now the main driver of job growth, creating four times more new positions than established firms. This entrepreneurial boom is fuelled by remote work, allowing start-ups to tap into global talent pools and stay cost-effective. However, funding remains a hurdle outside major tech hubs, with venture capital fundraising dropping 60% in 2023. This suggests many firms are using capital from the excess savings generated during the pandemic. What does this mean for hotels? Traditional sales tactics are disrupted. Large companies, once high-volume clients, are cutting costs. But smaller, growing start-ups are ready to spend. This presents an exciting opportunity for hotels to adapt and attract these potentially high-value, enthusiastic customers. The challenge: Many start-ups don't have offices and don't use traditional booking channels. This requires a shift in strategy! But remember, the start-up world is inherently volatile. Statistics show that 90% of start-ups globally fail within 5 years, while 75% making it to year 2. This emphasizes the need for cost-effective, tech-driven solutions to target this segment. Implementing a large workforce strategy might not be sustainable given the potential for rapid change. Additionally, hotels need to act quickly. Any delay in deploying these efforts could mean missing out on this golden opportunity. The solution: Embrace the new booking journey. Many of these new start-ups likely prioritize value over complex booking processes. They're comfortable booking online, suggesting initial interactions will be via OTAs or your website. Crafting a winning formula: Tailored offerings: Develop offers catering to start-up needs, different from traditional corporate offerings. Modern content: Ensure your website has relevant corporate content and handles corporate bookings seamlessly. Shifting sales focus: Sales teams need to adapt to managing a larger number of smaller accounts. Collaboration with revenue teams is crucial for smooth implementation. Tech optimization: Streamline manual processes with technology solutions.
