How these institutions integrate into the local context, while staying true to their global standards, will be a critical measure of success. This balance will define how they contribute to the region’s educational and cultural landscape while maintaining their international reputation. https://lnkd.in/gbKqkuGz

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025 have been released. Congratulations to South Africa's top 5 universities: 1. University of Cape Town 2. Stellenbosch University 3. University of the Witwatersrand 4. University of Johannesburg 5. University of KwaZulu-Natal While South Africa's performance is to be celebrated, I attended an interesting seminar which questioned how meaningful the metrics are for developing countries like South Africa. Also, is an increased focus on "rankings" improving the educational quality of South Africa's universities or merely the perceived quality? https://lnkd.in/dKcrJeVS

It has been a busy few weeks. Universities Australia's annual conference was held last week to coincide with the release of the Universities Accord, and this week 2000+ delegates from around the world gathered in Perth for the 17th APAIE | Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference. There are good reasons why I love my career in education. Our universities are engines of thought, debate, and innovation. Education has the power to change lives, to make real and lasting differences to people as individuals, and can transform societies and communities in powerful ways. International education brings people together from diverse cultures, histories, perspectives and experiences to learn and share together. I see these things every day! However universities in Australia face a challenge through a lack of appreciation of all the great things they do and are. Each of the dots on this circle, artwork from the Australia pavilion at APAIE, represent one of Australia's universities. It's a great visual piece. Universities are stronger when they work together, and I think they will need to work together, and with a collaborative spirit, in order to improve their broader social license and support.
