📢 Commission presents a blueprint for a European degree! Great news for higher education and for the European Education Area! The European Commission has adopted a package of ambitious proposals for Europe’s higher education sector, with the aim of working towards a European degree. The package contains a blueprint for this new and universally recognised qualification, with a concrete cooperation path and support measures for EU countries and their higher education systems, as a result of deeper and wider transnational cooperation between higher education institutions. As part of the package, the Commission has also adopted 2 proposals for Council recommendations that go beyond the pure ambition of developing a European degree: ✅ A European quality assurance and recognition system in higher education ✅ Attractive and sustainable careers in higher education This blueprint builds on the results of 6 Erasmus+ pilot projects that have involved more than 140 higher education institutions from all EU countries. The European Commission has just unveiled its plans for a groundbreaking initiative – the European Degree. A long-awaited development, especially meaningful for European University alliances and Erasmus Mundus consortia. As part of the ERUA-European Reform University Alliance and the Global-MINDS.eu Erasmus Mundus consortium, Uniwersytet SWPS is at the forefront of embracing these transformative educational initiatives. The European Degree will be a new qualification awarded after transnational programs at Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral levels, designed to be automatically recognized across the EU. This is a monumental step towards simplifying academic mobility and recognition across Europe. For students, it opens up unprecedented opportunities for cross-border education, ensuring that their qualifications are recognized EU-wide. For higher education institutions, it simplifies the creation of joint programs, enhancing the attractiveness and competitiveness of European universities. Employers stand to gain from a pool of certified, highly-skilled graduates, making Europe an even more attractive study and work destination. And at the heart of it, the European Degree aims to foster a stronger European identity and bring us closer to the vision of a European Education Area. The Commission has laid out steps from proposing European criteria for the degree to the development of implementation guidelines and integration into national legislation. A European degree Policy Lab, an annual Forum, and new Erasmus+ support for pathway projects and design measures will ensure that member states and higher education sectors, are well-supported in this journey. 🎓 Introducing the European Commission Degree Initiative The European Commission ambition to harmonise higher education with the European Degree 🌍 initiative marks a transformative moment. Announced on 27.03.2024, it's designed to improve academic cooperation, student mobility and degree standardisation across the EU. Highlights of the Initiative: - Increased Mobility: Facilitates easier cross-border education for students within the EU, aiming to create a truly unified European Education Area. - Introducing a unified quality assurance framework ensures that degrees across Europe meet high standards of education and are mutually recognized. - Collaboration Boost: Encourages universities to develop joint programs and form alliances, fostering closer academic cooperation across member states. What is the next step? The initiative's approach is currently undergoing validation through Erasmus Plus pilot projects, involving over 140 universities across the EU. ECIU welcomes the ambitious European higher education package as presented by the European Commission yesterday. It consists of: 🔵 blueprint for a European Degree, 🔵 a proposal for a council recommendation on quality assurance and recognition, 🔵 a proposal for a council recommendation on academic careers. Working together in Europe is key to continue innovate our education and respond to societal needs. ECIU aims for an innovative approach to the European Degree, also including other models of higher education, such as micro-credentials, in addition to full programmes. The European Degree must leverage the micro-credential movement to demonstrate the complementarity between forms of learning opportunities. This effort is set to the establishment of a voluntary European degree, heralding a new era of enhanced #mobility, #skill acquisition, and global #competitiveness for #students and the academic community alike. The initiatives presented are designed to diminish the #legal and #administrative hurdles that currently impede universities from collaborating to offer competitive joint degree programmes at the #Bachelor, #Master, and #Doctoral levels. These proposals are grounded in a deep respect for the autonomy and academic freedom of universities, while also acknowledging the educational competences of Member States and regional governments. This comprehensive package includes a Communication on a #blueprint for a #European #degree and two proposals for Council recommendations aimed at bolstering the higher education sector. The recommendations focus on refining quality assurance processes, facilitating automatic recognition of qualifications, and making academic careers more appealing and sustainable. The #blueprint introduces a novel joint programme model that is voluntary, flexible, and based on common criteria agreed at the European level. This initiative promises to streamline cooperation across borders, enabling seamless establishment of joint programmes by higher education institutions from different Member States. Central to the blueprint is a two-pronged approach towards realizing a European degree. The ultimate goal is a European degree, anchored in national legislation and automatically recognized across the EU, awarded by consortia of universities from different countries or possibly by a European legal entity established by such universities. The Commission is committed to supporting Member States and the higher education sector in this ambitious journey through concrete actions. These include the establishment of a European degree policy lab supported by the Erasmus+ programme in 2025, and the launch of European degree pathway projects within the Erasmus+ programme to provide financial incentives for stakeholders to participate in the development of a European degree. On 28 June the European Commission published the results of the 2024 Erasmus+ call for the European Universities Initiative. 🗓️🇪🇺📢 14 new alliances have been selected and will each receive up to €14.4 million over a period of four years to establish deep transnational cooperation. The total number of alliances is now 64, with more than 560 higher education institutions across Europe involved as full partners. 🔗🌍💶🎓 The European University Association congratulates its 61 members that are part of these new alliances. In total, 375 of EUA’s nearly 900 members are now full partners in an alliance under the European Universities Initiative. 🎉🏛️🤝 Furthermore, EUA looks forward to collaborating with the newly established Community of Practice for European Universities that was also selected for funding under the 2024 Erasmus+ call.
