Just finished an insightful read that highlights the critical role of private sector involvement in tackling decades of infrastructure underinvestment in the US. By moving beyond government-only models, the book uses historical examples to show how private industry has been instrumental in driving infrastructure projects driving efficiency and transparency. A timely reminder of the power of collaboration between private and public sector globally!

Each Friday I try and set aside some time from the daily churn of emails and action items just for learning. This Friday I reviewed the comprehensive and well written report "Decarbonizing the West" put out by the Western Governors' Association. Great piece of work by the WGA team Jack Waldorf. The report is the culmination of an extensive (and bipartisan) effort over the last year led by Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon across a broad population of stakeholders to identify key strategies for decarbonizing the West. It is an excellent report, rich in perspective and full of recommendations regarding land use and carbon sequestration via man-made and natural systems, and the unique challenges and opportunities in Western States. Governor Gordon's Foreword in the report was both powerful and practical and especially instructive for everyone at this moment in time. To quote from it: "If people are only being told they have to give something up to address climate concerns, as we have seen, some can prove to be very reluctant to do so. On the other hand, if the conversation is more focused on what we can do to make our industries more efficient and how these opportunities can grow our economy as well as retain and improve jobs and careers while helping our environment and improving our standard of living, then we have a better shot at leading the global effort on decarbonization."  

💡 What does the future of U.S. climate and energy policy look like? This week, the Council’s Director of Policy and Government Relations, Conner Brace, participated in a panel hosted by the The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University and the Climate Solutions Fund. Joined by an expert panel featuring Christopher Barnard, Luke Bolar, Andrea Strimling Yodsampa, PhD, and Clarence Edwards, Connor delved into the critical role that civil society plays in fostering bipartisan support for climate action. As we look ahead, it's clear that building broad, cross-sector consensus will be key to shaping a viable energy future for the U.S.

We're reminded often that local governments are responsible for ~60% of core public infrastructure in Canada, and while there are significant challenges in that responsibility, there are also opportunities. When the processes behind the enormous finances capable of managing, renewing, replacing and expanding infrastructure are aligned with a purpose, big things can happen.
