💡🌍 CLEAN ENERGY / Clean Energy Investment Report by the IEA 🌍💡 On June 6, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a new report highlighting the European Union's massive investments in clean energy. In response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and reduced gas supplies, the EU has accelerated its deployment of renewable energy to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels. Fatih Birol, the IEA's Executive Director, stated: > "In Europe, the development of networks and renewable energies has accelerated over the past two years, mainly for security reasons, as green energy means safe energy." The EU has set ambitious targets: - Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. - Achieving climate neutrality by 2050. - Adopting legislation for a "net-zero emission" industry in June 2024. 📊 **Key Points of the Report** 1. **Clean Energy Investment:** - 💰 For every dollar invested in fossil fuels, the EU invests over 10 dollars in clean energy. - 🌿 In 2023, investments in renewable energy production reached nearly $110 billion, an increase of over 6% compared to the previous year. - ⚡ Investments in electrical networks increased by over 20%, reaching almost $65 billion. 2. **Fossil Fuel Investment:** - 🛢️ Investments in oil and gas reached over $30 billion in 2023, with nearly $7 billion invested in liquefied natural gas (LNG) to progressively phase out Russian gas imports. 3. **Global Investments:** - 🌐 Global spending on clean energy technologies and infrastructure is expected to nearly double in 2024, reaching $2 trillion. - 💸 Total global energy investments are projected to exceed $3 trillion in 2024, with around $2 trillion allocated for clean technologies. - 🌞 In 2024, investment in solar photovoltaic (PV) is expected to reach $500 billion, thanks to lower module prices. 4. **Regional Disparities:** - 🇨🇳 China will account for the largest share of clean energy investments in 2024, reaching approximately $675 billion. - 🇪🇺🇺🇸 Europe and the United States will follow with respective investments of $370 billion and $315 billion. - 🌍 However, emerging and developing economies remain underfunded, receiving only 15% of global clean energy investments. 🌐 **Conclusion** This report highlights the acceleration of clean energy investments despite economic challenges, emphasizing the importance of the green industry for energy security and cost reduction. Rapid growth in BATTERY 🔋 deployment essential for achieving COP28 targets: International Energy Agency (IEA) "In 2023 alone, the deployment of batteries in the power sector soared by more than 130% year-on-year, adding 42 gigawatts (GW) to global electricity systems". The report emphasizes the need for a substantial scale-up in battery deployment by 2030 to meet the world's energy and climate targets set at the COP28 climate conference. This includes tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvements, and transitioning away from fossil fuels. To achieve these goals, around 1,500 GW of battery storage will be necessary. In addition to supporting the transition to renewable energy, battery storage is crucial for enhancing electricity access in developing regions. According to the report, batteries could help provide electricity to 400 million people by 2030 through decentralized solutions like solar home systems and mini-grids. Egypt aims for renewable energy to supply 42% of energy mix by 2040 Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, outlined key targets during the BRICS Energy Ministers Conference, including the goal for renewable energy to comprise over 42 percent of Egypt's energy mix by 2040 and ambitions to capture 5-8 percent of the global trade for green hydrogen by the same year. During the opening of the conference in Moscow, Esmat highlighted Egypt's commitment to transitioning to sustainable energy sources and leveraging its abundant renewable resources, particularly solar and wind energy. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently published the "World Energy Investment 2024" report, which examines capital flows and investment trends in the energy sector. On the bright side: - The world now invests almost twice as much in clean energy as it does in fossil fuels - Global energy investment is set to exceed USD 3 trillion for the first time in 2024, with USD 2 trillion going to clean energy technologies and infrastructure However: - Investment flow imbalances persist, particularly insufficient clean energy investments in EMDE outside China - While the current momentum behind renewables is impressive, meeting COP28 goals requires a doubling of clean energy investment by 2030 worldwide, and a quadrupling in EMDE outside China In a nutshell, there are some positive signals, but the energy transition journey is far from complete! The LDES Council strongly supports the inclusion of an energy storage target on the agenda of #COP29 and is calling for a global target of 1,500 GW by 2030 as essential to enable the COP28 goal of deploying 11 TW of renewables by 2040.
