I started as a 17-year-old boilermaker. That had an ‘accidental’ career change: It was never my first preference. Starting as a boilermaker by trade. Did my apprenticeship with a asphalt company. School-based at first, then picked up the rest with an asphalt company. Ended up enjoying asphalt more than being a boilermaker. So I chose that avenue. But here's the truth: It's not the work I enjoy. I don't think anyone does. It's the PEOPLE. You enjoy coming to work because of the people you're with. Your job can be the best in the world. But if you work with shit people? It's the people that'll pull you down, not the job. That's why I run B.A Road Services the way I do. It's all about the culture. The relationships. The support. Because at the end of the day? It's not just about laying asphalt. It's about building a team that feels like family. A place where everyone WANTS to show up. Even on the toughest days. That's the real foundation we're laying. Stronger than any road we've ever built. How about you? What keeps you coming back to your job day after day?

Here’s to the future of water treatment!

Lots of talk around Grenfell this last week alongside the results of industries latest efforts collecting stats and views around safe isolation. Much of the solutions are sat in the realms of attitudes, skills and supply chain setup. While we have tenders and PPM programs led largely on price what do we expect? All value engineered out. We now have supply chains and contractors without the workforce or finances to train apprentices. Cuts to time frames, materials and even basics like access equipment and correct application of RAMS. The solutions in my opinion and this is something I have long since repeated are not fast, do not involve the short courses “re training/specialism training” the training sector seems obsessed with. They are found in long term efforts to provide high quality apprenticeships across construction and properly support the employers in delivering that alongside training providers. Its not cheap, its not fast and it doesn’t involve a nice buzz word like CPD. What happened at Grenfell was catastrophic and if we cant have the wisest minds in construction and government break that down and ensure it never happens again faster than a time frame of a decade..... scandalous imho. In the niche of the electrical industry we have had “communities” spring up declaring knowledge and superiority beyond that of the industry of things. This is not that. Indeed some of those people who set agendas within the realms of ethics, rigor, honesty and such were far from those things. Under mining others with ideas, communities and in some cases secretly recording people to get them fired. Same people now marketing and raising a profile on the back of that awful tragedy. It can be argued apprentice 121 is another of those communities doing niche things but ultimately with microscopic impact. That is reality. All be it with the intent of doing it with an element of decency to all. My trust and hope is that “the industry of things does what is needed before it really is to late and in the meantime employers with the capability and opportunity do all they can to train people of the future. To solve these issues requires government and industry led initiatives and a real drive to want to deliver them. Just a view. #construction #grenfell

Getting into a blue collar skilled trade... As an apprentice, laborer, groundman... There a few important things to skills/traits to develop that will help you through out your entire career. One of these things is learning to take ownership/accountability for your mistakes and screw ups. We all make mistakes...but the important thing to do is to own up to those mistakes. Don't point fingers, don't act stupid... If you know you screwed up & it was your fault, own up to it! This is the best fourth year, plumbing rough- in. Worth listening to the end. In May 2022, 34.7 million people worked in the trades in the US. The Department of Labor categorizes skilled trade professions into five groups: farming, fishing, and forestry; construction and extraction; installation, maintenance and repair; production; and transportation and material moving. According to the Department of Labor, the US economy had 7.6 million unfilled jobs, but only 6.5 million people were looking for work. What will happen as baby boomers retire? What can be done to fill this gap? *Training Partnerships: Manufacturers teaming with educators to establish training programs for students. *Mentorship Programs: Pairing individual students with skilled trades workers. *Two-year Colleges & Trades Schools: Encouraging more attendance in two-year colleges and trade schools where students learn trade-specific skills. *Apprenticeships: Students working onsite with skilled trades workers.
