WorkSafe New Zealand is calling for urgent improvements in the trades to better protect apprentices following the second court sentencing this year related to a trainee's death. Josh Masters, a 23-year-old diesel mechanic apprentice with Button Logging Limited, was killed in January 2022 while fixing a log loader's hydraulics when its boom fell and crushed him. The WorkSafe investigation revealed inadequate procedures, supervision, and instruction from the company. Casey Broad, WorkSafe’s acting national investigations manager, emphasized the preventable nature of the incident and the company's failure to manage critical risks. Button Logging was fined $302,500 and ordered to pay $278,000 in reparations. This sentencing follows a similar case involving the death of 19-year-old apprentice Ethan Perham-Turner. WorkSafe stresses the importance of companies prioritizing health and safety, particularly for apprentices. Full article here:

Growing up in a poor family as the only stepchild, I had to work the garden removing weeds, a never-ending story. This was tedious and I was forced to spend my weekends and school holidays doing that! BUT…there was this ‘place’ where I escaped to while doing this, somewhere in my mind, I escape to the dream of developing things! One of my favorite dreams was the “water-motorbike”. Now remember in 1971 there was no jet skis or similar in existence. In my mind I was fitting a motorcycle engine in a long narrow boat working on ways to get the center point of gravity as low as possible and all the other things a 13-year-old would think of. The plan was one day when I am working to build it. I turned 16 got a job as an apprentice fitter and left home. Life happened and I was called for military service, as well as studies and…and when I open my eyes again; there was “water-motorbikes” (wetbikes and jet bikes) all over the world! I qualified as a fitter tradesman at the age of 20 and I was responsible for the maintenance of a huge material handling plant. Then I got into trouble often as I modified things to improve it, most successful but there was a couple of not so good! As I progress through life, I realized there is something different between me and others; I was ALWAYS seeing possible improvements and changes in just about everything! This causes a lot of frustrations for both the employer and myself. I then took five steps back with a massive drop in salary, and start a draughtsman apprenticeship and then I could change things! Decades later, a friend kept on asking me whether I’ve watched the movie ‘Transformers’ year after year my answer would be that I do not like that type of movies, but eventually I gave up and sit through the movie for just to satisfy him. When telling him that I watch it his response was: “…now then redesign the flipping things!” What was this condition I was suffering from, this thing in me always seeing better options in things? What made me patent my bridges at a massive cost with no return (Yet)? In 2024 I stumbled over it on YouTube! I discover that there are millions suffering from the same condition, boy was I relieved! The condition is referred to as: INVENTOR! After more than 50 years I finally understood what was this thing driving me and realize that I wasted decades making a living where as I should have invented an income to fund other inventions! Imagine a school boy complaining to the teacher the school bench is hurting him as if it is too small, then the teacher tells him that he should be in secondary school by now and not still in class one; the relieve to release himself and leap into the future! So that’s me completing another apprenticeship at 65 and are now leaping into the future! And all thanks to my ‘condition’! Embracing the Inventor Within: Finally identifying myself as an inventor brought clarity and relief.

Mastering pole climbing is fundamental for apprentice linemen. It's an essential aspect of their job that allows them to access power lines and equipment for installation, maintenance, and repairs. This skill ensures that linemen can work efficiently and safely at elevated heights. #linelife #linemenapprecation #IMPA

The road freight industry needs a diverse and sustainable workforce, and for many operations, that means attracting young drivers. Young people want great technology that they will not only take to like a duck to water, but that will ensure they have safe work conditions, compliance, and clear communication at all times. The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association has recently voiced support for moving to competency-based training and heavy vehicle apprenticeships to attract and retain young candidates to livestock and rural transport, which is a great idea. 👍😊 Wouldn’t it be great to back up this kind of change with work environments and tools that appeal to these new employees and deliver benefits to all drivers? ✅✅✅ If you need to update your TMS, get in touch for a demo and see how easy it is to transition to modern technology. https://godesta.com.au/ #transportmanagement #supplychainmanagement #logisticsmanagement

I had the pleasure of visiting Caterpillar Australia's incredible technical training center in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to Cat's own training center in Melbourne, Caterpillar dealers in Australia have equally impressive training centers throughout Australia. Australia is currently facing a critical shortage of heavy-equipment mechanics. Apprenticeship training centers like Cat's are working tirelessly to meet the country's needs. One thing that's very different about Australia when compared with America is that regardless of how desperate the country's need is for heavy-equipment mechanics, Australia WILL NOT resort to putting semi-skilled and untrained mechanics to work - it simply won't happen. If a heavy-equipment mechanic has not served a four-year apprenticeship, and met all the learning objectives set forth by TAFE, they are not permitted to work on any equipment, let alone heavy-equipment. I was recently teaching at a mine in Colorado. According to the maintenance supervisor, the mine is so desperate for mechanics, they will let anyone that can pass a drug test work in the mine. Many do not have the skillsets to use a screw-driver and pliers. Many cannot drive a pick-up truck that has a stick shift. Hopefully, the new administration will recognize America's need for an overhaul of our technical education. If not, we will be best advised not to go to war with any of our many adversaries. We simply do not have the competent skilled workforce needed to support our military.

Here you have it folks ... #ProofPerfect that the American Trucking Associations gives a crap about #SAFETY... and is #ONLY concerned about #KeepingDriverWagesLow and #PROFITS !! ================================= "Younger Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program Flounders in Red Tape However, among the motor carrier requirements for participation in the final regulation from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration were the installation and use of inward-facing cameras and that motor carriers receive approval as a #RegisteredApprenticeshipProgram from the U.S. Department of Labor. Although the younger-driver pilot program opened for applications in August 2022, more than a year later, it still had not gotten enough participants for a statistically valid research effort. According to the American Trucking Associations, the apprenticeship program was capped at 3,000 participating drivers at any one time, but only a few dozen had enrolled. As HDT previously reported, the topic was one of several that a House subcommittee grilled then-FMCSA administrator Robin Hutcheson on in December 2023. In that hearing, Cory Maloy (R-UT) charged that the program had requirements that were not in the IIJA that made it too difficult to qualify. The American Trucking Associations and the The International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) championed a provision in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, signed in March, which said Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration may #NOT #require motor carriers wishing to participate in the SDAP Program to use inward-facing cameras or become DOL-registered apprenticeship programs." ======================== So, since the program is a flop, let's #LOWER the standards to make the #Biden Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation look good? Mere, #INSANITY and a #CORRUPTION of the High Standards that Professional Truck Drivers hold themselves to !!
