Skills Development:Education and Training: Invest in vocational training initiatives in STEM education. . Partnership with Industry: Partner with tech companies to develop upskilling programs for employees.Industry Initiatives : . Invest in startups:Venture capital: Encourage venture capital firms to invest in Indian tech startups. . #SoutheastAsia (SEA) is the fastest-growing internet economy in the world, and bigtech is finally giving the region the attention it deserves. 1. According to the seminal report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, SEA's digital economy, valued at a mere USD 31 billion in 2015, is expected to grow more than 30X to USD 1 trillion by 2030. However, the region has long been "considered a tech hinterland", rather than a wellspring of tech #innovation. 2. That may soon change, as #technology majors announce billions of dollars in investment in the region in recent months. Take #Singapore, for example, where Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently unveiled plans to invest USD 9 billion to expand its cloud computing infrastructure in the city-state. 3. Or #Indonesia, where, within the span of a few weeks: (i) Microsoft announced an investment of USD 1.7 billion in Indonesia to develop new cloud and AI infrastructure; (ii) Apple opened its fifth Apple Developer Academy; (iii) NVIDIA and PT. Indosat Tbk jointly committed USD 200 million to build an AI centre in Solo; and (iv) SpaceX's Starlink obtained a licence to operate. 4. After "decades of playing second fiddle to #China and #Japan", SEA, a region of about 675 million people, is drawing more tech investment than ever. The world's largest tech companies are expected to invest up to USD 60 billion building data centres over the next few years, as the region's "young populations embrace video streaming, online shopping and generative AI". 5. Among other reasons, investors are attracted to SEA for its "political stability and large markets". The region’s "strategic role as a buffer zone amid intensifying US-China competition also helps attract investment from around the world". Foreign direct investment in SEA reached a record USD 222.5 billion in 2022. 6. While investors are drawn to the region’s growing middle class, increasingly well-educated workforce, and large market for gadgets and online services, the region's complexity – SEA is made up of about a dozen politically, culturally and geographically disparate countries – make SEA a challenging market. Tax, corruption, and regulatory uncertainty, are also perennial bugbears. 7. How will the recently announced investments by bigtech affect the regional technology and startup ecosystem? Will the expected inflows of capital, talent, and ideas be just what we need to thaw the tech winter? Or will the supply of capital and resulting competition for tech talent adversely affect #VentureCapital investors (who were sitting on USD 15.7 billion of undeployed funds at the end of 2022) and #startups? Empowering Pakistan: Unleashing Tech Talent from the Ground Up 🚀 Pakistan is facing some of the toughest economic challenges in its history, with many of its brightest minds seeking opportunities abroad due to a growing sense of despair. Ibn Khaldun noted in his seminal work, The Muqaddimah, "Throughout history many nations have suffered a physical defeat, but that has never marked the end of a nation. But when a nation becomes the victim of a psychological defeat, that marks the end of a nation." I recently had a very inspiring meeting with Dr.Samina Zehra, the newly appointed Economic Minister at the Pakistan High Commission in London. Our discussions centred on enhancing tech opportunities in Pakistan’s smaller towns and cities—a mission I am deeply passionate about. Nearly two years ago, we embarked on a journey to create job opportunities in my family’s hometown of Gojra, driven by the belief that talent knows no borders and that technology can be a great leveller for the developing world. The Pakistani diaspora plays a crucial role in this endeavour. When my uncle arrived in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, my grandfather told him he was an ambassador for his people. This philosophy has guided our family's efforts to create opportunities and live a purpose-driven life. I know many of you also feel the same way but can't see the path to help effectively. Our mission led to the creation of Cloud Surge, which I co-founded with Ilyas Khan. Based around a skills academy, we prepare future talent and operate offices in small towns, employing the brightest minds working remotely for digital transformation practices across the UK in Microsoft Dynamics and Power Platform initially. We aim to scale IT delivery across 100 small towns and cities, collaborating with tech leaders worldwide who share our mission to democratise access to skilled jobs, regardless of location. Dr. Samina's sincerity and wholehearted involvement are a breath of fresh air, and together we aim to introduce innovative approaches by uniting inspiring individuals from the IT industry to come together. Our model is straightforward: 1. Partner with subject matter experts in cutting-edge IT fields. 2. Establish academies to train IT graduates in 100 small towns across Pakistan. 3. Create a network of trained teams collaborating with professionals in the developed world to deliver innovative solutions. We believe the future is in a 'fusion teams' model, combining in-demand IT expertise with local insights to produce highly efficient and productive outcomes together. The data centre boom - at watt cost? My take on TheStar article. Many view hyper-scaler cloud data centers (like AWS, Microsoft, and GCP) as heavy consumers of energy and water, offering little value to the countries hosting them. This misunderstanding often stems from confusing traditional data centers with the Cloud. Real Cloud servers are extremely energy-optimized and are utilized only when needed, which could be for minutes or hours, thanks to auto-scaling. This feature not only enhances consumer service but also reduces costs and saves energy, contributing to achieving net-zero targets. Traditional data centers pose significant risks to tenants and the country due to high resource consumption, outdated hardware and software, expensive licenses, manual operations, and security vulnerabilities. In contrast, the cloud generates value beyond operational jobs: As a startup founder, partnering with AWS allowed us to expand our Energy SaaS into 15 countries, oversee over €2 billion per year in electricity transactions, and ultimately achieve a successful exit (acquired by a NASDAQ-traded company). This success had a multiplier effect, fostering prosperity, new startups, high-paying jobs, and taxes for my previous country. With many traditional industries on the decline, most young people prefer to avoid low-paying, uncertain jobs. Smart countries are pivoting towards digital economies to retain and attract talent. By embracing cloud and SaaS models, entrepreneurs can access global markets from anywhere, be it a city or a remote village with a #Starlink Internet connection from SpaceX. No longer is emigration necessary to reach a global market; local innovation and high-quality digital assets from Malaysia can now reach the world. The cloud enables value creation, transforming countries from digital consumers to producers.
