Kenya's health sector is currently grappling with one critical component of health systems: Health Care leadership. I am saddened to note that policies, programs and reforms are being implemented without clear leadership. Take for example the recent policy on Universal Health Coverage which was already piloted in 5 counties and just needed an up-scaling. The lessons learnt in the pilot phase, the successes and failures have not been brought forth to stakeholders for purposes of expansion and roll out. Instead we are still stuck in meeting and conferences yet it supposedly is the pillar on which health reforms stand on. There is a critical need for healthcare leadership in the country to loom at posterity and stop looking at health as an economic project, Because it is not.

In the post-independence period, Tanzania made significant strides in planning for public health, with a key focus on maternal healthcare. However, healthcare policy reform remained constrained by colonial-era challenges. This article, published in Africa Development, Vol. XLIX, No. 2 (2024), explores the complexities of health policy planning from 1961 to the 1970s, highlighting the impact of limited resources and social factors on maternal healthcare improvement efforts. 🖱️ https://lnkd.in/ePvWwXGz Veronica Kimani Universität zu Köln #PublicHealthPolicy #MaternalHealthcare #Tanzania #PostColonialStudies

The WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All has found that at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitution. However, this right is not being fully realized, and more than half of the world's population lacks access to essential health services. In Pakistan, for instance, the government spends just 1.2% of GDP on healthcare, resulting in only half of the population having access to these vital services. This is why the theme for World Health Day 2024 is 'My health, my right'. Let's work together for “driving change for generations” to ensure that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, for all. #WorldHealthDay2024 #HealthForAll #pakistan #who
