Hey, it's time to talk about alt text! It’s the single most important, yet often overlooked, part of your website. Alt text is the short description that appears when an image fails to load or is read out by a screen reader for the visually impaired. Here are some best practices to follow: 1. Be descriptive, not decorative. 2. Keep it short, around 125 characters. 3. Avoid vague language and be specific. 4. Use keywords but don’t stuff. 5. Keep it relevant to the image and context. 6. Consider the audience, especially the visually impaired. 7. Proofread to avoid mistakes. Think of alt text as an elevator pitch for your image. It might take some practice, but once you get the hang of it, your website will be more accessible, SEO-friendly and user-focused.

For no apparent reason, the recollection of style sheets just drifted across the crowded landscape of my cognition. Back in the day, many publications had their own style sheets. Those that did not typically followed AP or Chicago. As a freelancer, I did my best to abide by each but trusted editors to catch my oversights. Just one example was the managing of numbers. Options: numbers associated with actual quantities were expressed in numerals while others were spelled out, so it was 10 miles but the traffic stress was ten times the usual. Some used numerals for everything...10 and 10 in the previous example. Some required double digits to be numerals while others insisted on hyphenation, which led to 98 or ninety-eight depending on the pub. Addresses were numerals or spelled out to follow the practice of the occupant; the lucky few with single-digit addresses often went for words and the status they implied. We had 2014 Central Avenue and Two South Marketplace. I still try to adhere to clients’ preferences but it’s harder to do now since few have actual style sheets for reference. Is it better now? Worse? I haven’t bothered to form a subjective reality on the matter. It’s just an observation.

Accessibility Tip of the Day: Text in Images Avoid using images of text, as they can't be resized or translated. If you must use an image of text, make sure the alt text includes the exact text in the image. Ditch text in images! They're unfriendly to resizing and translation. ▪️ Keep sentences and paragraphs short. ◾ Make sure your main keyword appears about 1-2% in your text. Bold key elements. ◾ Use images to split the narrative. ◾ Use quotes. ◾ Use numbered lists when you have more than four items or bullet points if you have four or fewer.
