I had a request from a newly appointed manager, for advice on how to manage a Team, and here’s what I shared.
Maybe it will be useful to you, as well.
Just give them all the information, context and resources to get their work done, and have them update you regularly.
Let them know that you are available as a resource, as well, but let them do the work on their own. The younger workers are particularly sensitive to overbearing managers.
Last tip: go over the Project Plan with them from the beginning, explaining how it all fits together, and what their role is, why it’s important and where that work fits into the big picture.
Here is a simple Project Management System:
PROJECTS
1. Define Objectives
2. Plan Job, with Steps, Resources (People, Money, Other) and Schedule
3. Execute Plan
4. Monitor Progress and Deviations from Plan (Bottlenecks, Logjams, Missing Links, Lagging Items)
5. Revise Schedule, as required, but Push to On-Time Finish
Meet with your Team at important points in the Project to go over 4. and adjust 5. if needed.
