What conditions form a great team? Project Management in the experience industry is a plethora of variables, a dichotomy that’s a conglomeration of actionable data and an enmeshment of human spirit. PM is 90% communication, but the 10% keeps it spinning off the rails. Budget. Schedule. Quality Control. Technical Direction. Etc. But if there’s a kink in the armor of moral, it’s gridlock. Then there’s the contrary, when a contagious energy feeds on itself, and momentum skyrockets. What is it about these moments that makes them so? Is it the mission? Purpose? Common values? The culture? Feeling valued? Is it that each member holds an archetypical role, feeling valued as the responsible agent of that important contribution in their own right? I think being valued and having enough responsibility to earn that value is an important combination for anyone at any level. Or is it breaking boundaries, doing something we’ve never done before? Pushing limits? Doing something new? What’s that secret concoction that makes a great team?

One challenge of project management is encouraging the team to work together on the same sheet of paper. In todays increasingly specialized and functional team members it’s important that they be curious and learn more about each other and their individual activities. It’s better to work from same sheet than team working individually and try to tape or combine their work later.

In managing your project, would you follow this same rigid approach as this man, or would you take a more inquiring approach, asking questions and clarifying doubts to ensure efficiency and effectiveness?? My thoughts - This unnecessary action highlights the importance of flexibility, pragmatism, and common sense in project management. By challenging assumptions and streamlining processes, managers can avoid unproductive stickler-to-rules mentality and ensure efficient use of resources. Empowering team members to think critically and make decisions can also help eliminate unnecessary steps and achieve project goals.

I must say, it has been quite a journey so far, and I'm truly amazed by the wealth of knowledge I have gained. Surprisingly, I have learned that flexibility is a key attribute of a successful project manager. I never realized how important it is to adapt one's approach to different projects and organizational contexts. This revelation has broadened my perspective and made me more open-minded in my approach to project management. As for the responsibilities associated with the role of a project manager, I find the strategic planning and decision-making aspects particularly appealing. The ability to shape the project's overall direction and make informed choices based on data and team input resonates with me. Additionally, the opportunity to lead and motivate a diverse team towards a common goal is something I find incredibly fulfilling.

Emotional intelligence (EI) significantly enhances project management by improving communication, conflict resolution, empathy, decision-making, and stress management. Project managers with high EI can clearly convey messages, understand and resolve conflicts, and build stronger, motivated teams. They can make well-balanced decisions by considering both logical and emotional factors. Additionally, high EI helps manage stress and maintain composure under pressure, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met. Overall, EI fosters a positive work environment, strengthens team dynamics, and drives successful project outcomes. 🚀

Project Management is NOT a simple profession. Here are some reasons why ⬇️ Stakeholder management - Will highlight all areas in your communication skills that need improvement Task management - Will challenge the way your organize thoughts and prioritize processes and ideas (or tasks) Risk management - Will challenge your ability to see big picture AND small picture Resource management - Will challenge your ability to identify, prioritize and allocate resources throughout the project life cycle. Financial management - Will challenge your ability to be strategic with the power of the purse Team management - Will test every single one of your interpersonal skills; Your familiarity with varying communication styles, conflict resolution, the ability to identify what is motivating to a diverse team of individuals and spark that motivation in each of them. Again, project management is NOT a simple profession. You have to be prepared to have your biggest weaknesses exposed and challenged and still choose to step back up to the plate every day ready to perform better than yesterday. Truly, I can’t think of a more humbling yet rewarding profession. I have the utmost respect for the Project Managers on my team. Mary Tresa Gabriel Great visual 👏🏾

A crucial reminder: People aren’t just looking for great work; they want to feel valued in the process. In project management, even when budgets or timelines can’t be stretched, you can still show team mindedness. This could mean: • Transparent communication about project constraints • Adding value with insights or resources • Regular check-ins to show commitment to the set goals Sometimes, it’s not about saying “yes” to every request, but about making others feel heard.

I'm currently pursuing certification in project management, while still in law enforcement. My background in law enforcement, I specialize in interview and interrogation techniques, including kinesics. I've extensively studied the core personality traits that all individuals possess, which include dominant, influencer, steadfast, and compliant traits. An individual will have one of the four as a core personality trate. Understanding these traits is crucial as they significantly impact team dynamics and communication. By identifying and leveraging these traits within a team, one can strategically pair individuals whose strengths complement each other's weaknesses, thereby fostering effective teamwork and enhancing overall project management success. This approach ensures that team members are aligned in a way that maximizes their collaborative potential, addressing any issues that may arise and optimizing strategic team building efforts in management. Many times it isn’t a bad leader, just a person who doesn’t understand proper strategic team building.

The best project managers know their team members and understand how they work best. Some need close monitoring and assistance. Others work better with more independence and flexibility. Understand how to keep team members working most effectively toward a shared goal.

4moOne of the secret ingredients is a leader or one that takes the leadership role with enthusiasm for the project and openness to receive all ideas. Those who play in that space can easily inspire others to bring forth their ideas without being guarded and afraid to fail. Being in the trenches together on a team, thinking big, and agreeing to accept all outcomes makes a team experience most memorable.
