Today I took a look inside the book I wrote on #teamresilience way back in 2016. It's been a while since I read it... It was written just before we published our Resilience at Work Team Scale in Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM) What struck me most was how the challenges that prompted the text are increasing rather than easing. The back cover promotes the content as useful for teams: - Rebuilding after a major restructure or changes in staffing or organisational direction - Regularly dealing with difficult tasks or demanding customers - Working in constant change and uncertainty - Experiencing difficult group dynamics - Time pressured or having to do more with less - Trying to meet unrealistic or competing demands - On track but looking for an extra boost to team effectiveness. Sound familiar? When I started this work it was of most value to those in emotionally demanding work such as health and community services. Now it's #teams in all occupations. Of course, these factors are now being tackled under WH&S as #psychosocialhazards. Hopefully this need for compliance will mean my book is obsolete when I look at it again in another eight years ...

Workplace Toxicity: The #1 Driver of Burnout A recent global survey by the McKinsey Health Institute found that toxic workplace behavior is the #1 driver for burnout and intent to quit. Toxic behavior is a combination of unfair or degrading treatment, lack of inclusiveness, sabotaging, cutthroat competition, abusive management, workload dumping, playing favorites, inflexibility, and lack of ethics. Which book shall I write next? A year ago, I announced I was going to write a book, and publish it on 29th February, despite not having written a word 🙄🤦♀️🤣 But write it I did, and I’ve been gobsmacked by the positive responses I’ve had. Not only did people buy it and read it, they liked it 😊. Thank you to everyone who bought my book and read it, and gave me such lovely feedback. So now, as the summer drifts away, but a passing memory, it is time to write my next book. The pace will be more leisurely, but the question is, which book shall I write? There are 4 options bellow. Which do you think I should write first and why? 1. A deep dive into the state of mental health services in the UK - as someone who has worked in NHS services, I would like to tell my stories of what really goes on behind the scenes. 2. Setting up a trade union. The HR and Workers Trade Union will be 5 years old in December this year. I have taken on many cases, and the stories have been eye watering. The pain and anguish that poor treatment at work can create is heartbreaking (all stories will be anonymised of course). 3. Chapter 10 - the extended version 😉🤣 4. Beyond HR - my take on the future for the battle weary profession. A few tales and some top tips, but also a way forward to a future where everyone can flourish, both staff and bosses. 5 Self-Reflection Questions to Help Busy Leaders Prioritize Self-Care I used to think that self-care was only for the affluent. But I came to learn that it was necessary for supporting my wellbeing. My coach helped me to see the ways in which I was grossly neglecting self-care and take small but manageable shifts to improve. "The fact is, if we work with people, we are working with people in trauma." This is a line from Chapter 2 of "The Empathetic Workplace" by Katharine Manning. I read, a lot. I listen, a lot. Prior to reading this book, I thought I was *fully* equipped to navigate the various traumas that I come into contact with in my day-to-day business--I was wrong. This book did an incredible job of providing actionable, relatable, and digestible guidance on how to walk through discussing trauma in the workplace in a positive, professional, and supportive way. Manning's LASER (✨ Listen to understand✨Acknowledge the experience✨Share information thoughtfully✨Empower with options✨Recap and follow up) method is applicable in almost all scenarios, and the stories she includes help to create a visual for HOW it can be applied in your own workplace. This framework is practical, actionable, and deeply rooted in empathy. Regardless of your position, I encourage EVERYONE to read or listen to this book.
