Old-school museums vs. new-school museums (as I call them 😂). It's a hot topic when deciding on your museum strategies. The traditional museum (old-school) view prioritises preservation, focusing on safeguarding artefacts and history at all costs. The helpful museum (new-school) champions audience engagement, striving to make collections accessible and relatable to the public. But... 🔍 Do all museums need to change to 100% one or the other? 🔍 How do we strike a balance between maintaining our collections and ensuring they resonate with today’s audiences? Is there an optimal ratio? 🔍 Is the debate of deciding to prioritise preservation or public engagement actually helping or hindering our approach to achieving sustainability and the purpose of museums? 🤔 Sometimes I feel that we are losing sight of the true purpose of museums in this battle of priorities. What’s your take on the old school vs new school approach in museums? #Museums #Heritage #Preservation #PublicEngagement #MuseumInnovation

When Glenn Lowry, the director of The Museum of Modern Art, confesses to sleepless nights worrying about the institution's finances, it's a wake-up call to the art world: The road ahead for museums is paved with innovation, risk-taking, and an openness to failure, as they reassess traditional funding models and public engagement strategies. In a recent Museums Journal feature, Aurelie and Leslie explore this landscape of uncertainty and delve into the pressing need for systemic change in the arts sector. Key Takeaways: ▶ Transparency isn't just a virtue—it's a powerful tool for building trust and securing long-term support. ▶ Inviting donors to understand the real challenges we face can lead to more meaningful engagements and investments. ▶ Navigating the arts funding crisis requires innovative thinking and a shared vision for the future. The strategies we adopt today will define the cultural legacy we leave for tomorrow. What steps can we take to ensure that museums remain vital centers of culture and education? How can we creatively address financial constraints while staying true to our missions? Thank you, Museums Association, for echoing these questions. Join the conversation and help us pave the way towards a more sustainable and collaborative future for museums. #Art #Philanthropy #Museums #ArtsandCulture #ArtWorld #GivingBack #Sustainability

How do you see museums fulfilling their role as educational, cultural, and preservation institutions in your community? How does fulfilling this role foster trust from your community? Public trust is fundamental to the mission of museums. Museums preserve natural and cultural resources for public benefit, ensuring that collections are accessible for study, enjoyment, and learning. According to the American Alliance of Museums Code of Ethics, museums in the United States are grounded in the tradition of public service, holding their collections and information as a benefit for those they serve. Museums must uphold the highest levels of accountability and transparency to maintain this trust. Key standards include responsible stewardship of resources, identifying and serving community needs, inclusivity, educational commitment, and compliance with legal standards. This is a high bar to clear and an important pillar in our local, state, national, and international communities. When we approach exhibits, we keep this tenant in mind and design in a way that benefits and best serves the interests of every visitor, whose collective trust is critical to the mission and future of museums. 📷 "This is Richmond, Virginia" at The Valentine #exhibitdesign #exhibitiondesign #exhibitdesigners #exhibitiondesigners #trustinmuseums #Americanmuseums #museums #communityresource

Diversity and inclusion are becoming essential focuses for museums, as institutions strive to represent a broader range of cultures, histories, and voices. By collaborating with underrepresented communities, museums are enriching their collections and exhibits, ensuring that the stories they tell reflect the diversity of the societies they serve. This effort includes working with diverse artists and curators and engaging in dialogues that bring new perspectives to the forefront. Museums are also rethinking their acquisition practices, often repatriating artifacts and making exhibits more accessible to all audiences. This shift fosters an inclusive environment where visitors from different backgrounds can see themselves reflected in the exhibits, making museums spaces for learning, representation, and cultural connection. By prioritizing diversity and inclusion, museums are evolving into more dynamic, relevant institutions for the modern world. #DiversityInMuseums #InclusionMatters #CulturalRepresentation #MuseumInnovation #InclusiveSpaces

In today's inclusive society, it's imperative that our cultural institutions are accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities or sensory needs. By prioritizing accessibility in museum exhibits, we ensure that all individuals, including those with disabilities, can fully participate in and enjoy historical interpretation and cultural exploration. From wheelchair ramps and tactile exhibits to audio descriptions and sign language interpreters, there are a myriad of resources available to enhance accessibility and create a welcoming environment for all. It's crucial to recognize that accessibility extends beyond physical accommodations and encompasses a wide range of needs, including physical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, and more. By embracing a diverse and inclusive approach to accessibility, museums can better serve their communities and enrich the visitor experience for everyone. What is a museum, really? 🤔 The ICOM says it’s a “permanent institution in the service of society… fostering diversity and sustainability… accessible, inclusive, and participatory.” The Museums Association says it’s a place for “Inspiration, learning, and enjoyment… holding collections in trust for society.” A recent 5-star reviewer of the Natural History Museum said it’s “a fascinating and awe-inspiring place…the perfect spot for both a fun and education experience”. After reading so much about museums, it’s got me curious… And now I’m asking LOADS of questions about it: Is there a limit to the size of a museum? (Could I create a “museum” in a shoebox? Could a city itself be classed as a museum?) Where does a museum’s “status” start and stop? What if a digital museum is down for maintenance—does it stop being a museum for that time? And where do the boundaries lie between a museum and an archive? (Hoping someone in my network can help with this one!) And then there's the old-school vs. new-school approach to museums—do we prioritise preservation or the public experience? How does that affect the definition of a museum? I’d love to hear what you think! 🏛️ #MuseumDebate #Museums #Heritage #Curator

🌍 Why Museums Matter 🌍 Museums are more than just buildings filled with artifacts—they are the keepers of our shared stories, the bridges between past and present, and the gateways to understanding our world. They celebrate human creativity, preserve cultural heritage, and foster empathy by showcasing diverse perspectives. They ignite curiosity in young minds, provide solace in turbulent times, and encourage lifelong learning for everyone. Now, more than ever, museums play a crucial role in addressing global challenges, from climate change to social justice, by creating dialogue and driving action. Do you know the DEAI priciples? 🤔 To effectively connect with and engage the growing diversity of their audiences, museums today can evaluate every facet of their operations through the lens of DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY, and INCLUSION. The DEAI principles are crucial for ensuring museums reflect the communities they serve and drive meaningful, sustainable change. 📰 The latest November/December issue of Museum Magazine by the American Alliance of Museums dives deep into how DEAI programs are revolutionizing internal systems and policies in museums, making them more inclusive and impactful. 📖 The bi-monthly Museum Magazine is a must-read for museum professionals and everyone who loves museums. https://lnkd.in/ez4UtEVq #museospace #museums #museummagazine #deai #deaiprinciples #diversity #accessibility #equity #inclusion

In 2023, The Space (Digital Arts) collaborated with the University of Exeter to investigate the current digital evaluation methods in the cultural sector. The study revealed insufficient resources and funding for thorough evaluation, scarce models for best practices, and a shortage of common terminology. Consequently, The Space has produced a set of resources tailored for digital professionals in arts and cultural organisations globally. Alongside Halsey Burgund & Francesca Panetta I contributed to the 👨💻 Embedding evaluation into interactive projects article.
