🌟 Carloso🦾 returns : Second Week Development News!🌟 I’m thrilled to share the latest updates on our innovative platform, Carloso, which is designed to enhance safety and conduct risk assessments for falling blocks in underground tunnels and mining structures. This week, I focused on developing aerodynamic predictions, and I have created a 2-minute video showcasing our progress. The video consists of three main parts: 1. **Simulation of Block Dynamics:** 2. **Prediction of Resistance Vortex Impacts ** 3. **Risk Assessment Based on Velocity Reliability:** Falling blocks present serious risks in underground environments due to several factors, including geological instability, structural weaknesses, and environmental influences. These blocks can fall due to weak or fractured materials, erosion caused by water, vibrations from nearby activities, or excessive loads from traffic, mining equipment, or stored materials. Proper geological assessments and effective engineering practices are essential to mitigate these risks and ensure safety. Our platform, Carloso, utilizes both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to offer a comprehensive risk assessment. Here’s a closer look at its three key components: 1. **Dynamic Analysis and Energy Calculations:** The first component focuses on understanding the dynamics of falling blocks and calculating the energy involved over time. By analyzing factors such as mass, height, and gravitational forces, we gain valuable insights into their behavior during a fall. How many geoscientists does it take to pre-interpret a large 3D seismic volume, extract all surfaces and build more than 80% of faults, accurately? Just 1, assuming he's using Seisnetics. Same applies for screening CCS storage candidates: - extract all surfaces - display the fitness attribute (seismic facies variability) - find the continuous layers with a green fitness color, meaning homogeneous - do interval processing to split potential weak zones - build the fault network if applicable. Viewers might know that our very own Graeme Alexander takes a keen interest in multidisciplinary engineering and in particular accident/incident investigations. Sharing his reflections here: I have recently read a Prepublication copy of the “Failure Analysis of the Arecibo Observatory 305-Meter Telescope Collapse” which I accessed via the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. (Link in the comments) Believe it or not this technical document is truly a fascinating read and reinforces my fundamental beliefs in first principles. I was surprised to discover that a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) was not conducted on the complex and costly equipment discussed. I recall the necessity of a structural failure analysis on a lattice-type derrick installed on our ship. The document highlights the significance of redundancy in structures, the importance of consistent design criteria, and the necessity of documented operational inspection and repair maintenance procedures. It also emphasizes the dangers of complacency and the advantages of exploring cross-industry parallels, such as offshore mooring methods. Additionally, it delves into the intriguing world of radio waves as an unseen and not fully understood energy source. The document underscores the critical nature of ongoing performance monitoring. So, whilst not a typical marine topic reading the report does emphasize in my mind the importance of Engineering good practice which is the bedrock of our DP FMEA’s. The SEGY Case In 2022 Equinor published the Smeaheia Dataset. "The Smeaheia dataset is a reference dataset containing subsurface data, reports and geomodels related to assessment of proposed CO2 storage sites in the Smeaheia region, Hordaland Platform offshore Norway." It contains 2D SEGY surveys, 3D SEGY surveys, fault sticks, interpreted horizons, boreholes with logs and other data. The complete 2D SEGY surveys contain 11 GB of data, the 3D survey is 7 GB.
