With over 15 years of experience as a teacher and international school leader, my journey has been one of finding purpose and pursuing a passion for education. I’ve always been drawn to the arts – with a childhood dream of dancing and performing on stage. Yet, like many, I chose the “practical” path, studying law and leaving my creative dreams behind. But life had other plans! I found my true calling in teaching, where I could merge my love for creativity with the transformative power of education. From producing whole-school theatre productions to encouraging young children to pursue their passions, I’ve always believed that education should go beyond academics – it should celebrate individuality and inspire a lifelong love for learning. In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world, the traditional educational model is struggling to keep up. That’s why I believe in the power of teaching life skills to future-proof our children – giving them the tools they need to thrive in an uncertain future. This belief led me to co-found 21 Skills Hub a platform dedicated to bridging the gap in our children’s development and empowering them with essential life skills. I am deeply committed to inspiring children to follow their dreams and to avoid the mistakes I made by not pursuing mine sooner. Mom & Dad: 2 Teachers in My Life The other day, I overheard someone say, “They’re just my parents.” Just your parents? So, are they “just” your parents if they: - Are the ones who wake up early to prepare you for school? - Are the ones who help you with your homework and projects? - Are the ones who cheer the loudest at your school events? - Are the ones who teach you life lessons that go beyond textbooks? - Are the ones who instil values like kindness, respect, and hard work? - Are the ones who support your dreams, no matter how big or small? - Are the ones who celebrate your successes and comfort you in your failures? Because these are just a few of the things my parents do every single day. My mom, a dedicated teacher, sparked my love for learning. I remember struggling with maths, and she patiently taught me until I understood. My dad taught me life skills. I'll never forget the summer he taught me to fix my bike. It was about perseverance, problem-solving, and accomplishment. Parents don't get days off or recognition for their countless hours of investment in their children's education and upbringing. So here's to you, Mom and Dad, and all parents who have been teachers in their children's lives, whether in the classroom or at home. Because you're not "just" parents. Until the age of 25, I thought teachers in college & school were meant to be celebrated on Teachers Day. But I couldn’t be more wrong. With time & age, I realized teaching & lessons can be in various forms. Undoubtedly teachers played a huge role in shaping me into who I am and forever be grateful to them. However, after countless experiences, I want to celebrate 3 teachers of my life who are not found in classrooms, but they teach me valuable lessons every day. Let me share who they are and why they are so special. 1/ 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 Becoming a dad to my two kids has been a real eye-opener. Their curiosity and resilience have taught me to stay patient & keep going, even when things get tough. They've made me a better person in ways I never expected. 2/ 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 Every day, I learn by watching how they solve problems. They teach me new ways to think and approach challenges. This makes me a better worker and leader. 3/ 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 Mentors give me advice and help me make the right choices. They push me to do my best and to reach my goals. These 3 teachers have been crucial in developing me as a professional which books couldn’t have made me learn. I am grateful to them & eager to continue learning from them. Recently, I had a conversation with my 12-year-old nephew that gave me pause. He confided in me that he was feeling down because a girl turned him down when he asked her out. Initially, I chuckled—after all, he's just a kid; only 12 ! But then it hit me hard. Are we unintentionally burdening our children with adult emotions and pressures? Social media seems to have fast-forwarded their childhood, exposing them to expectations and rejections far beyond their years. It's as if their playground now includes navigating complex relationship dynamics and managing online personas before they've even mastered long division. Real education, one that is based on values, seems to be missing today. How many youngsters would without hesitating give up their bus seat for an elderly person or a physically challenged person? These acts of kindness and respect are as crucial as any lesson in algebra or history. In a world obsessed with grades and achievements, we often overlook the importance of teaching life skills. How to cope with failure, how to treat others with respect, how to handle disappointments—these lessons are just as vital as algebra and history. Real education should emphasize values and ideas alongside core subjects. When faced with a problem, it's often our ability to cope and our moral compass that guide us, not just our academic knowledge. Life itself is an exam, but its syllabus isn't always taught in the classroom. I believe it's time to rethink our educational priorities. As parents, educators, and mentors, it's on us to nurture the next generation not just academically, but as compassionate and resilient individuals. For the past month, she has been volunteering to teach students at an orphanage, and it’s been a journey full of learning—not just for the kids, but for her too! She’s finding it challenging because, while the kids adore her, some aren’t performing as per her expectations. I couldn’t help but chuckle. For the kids, it must be hard to take a petite, small-boned girl seriously as their teacher; she probably seems more like a playmate! But here’s what amazes me: she’s learning early that teaching isn’t just about showing up and dictating lessons. It’s about understanding your audience, adapting to their challenges, and customizing your approach. She’s been studying late at night to explain science and math in Marathi—a language she’s not fluent in—because she knows the kids are more comfortable in their regional tongue. It’s incredible to watch her invest time and relearn in order to teach better. As a parent, I want to provide her with all the infrastructure she needs, but like a true corporate manager, I also want her to work with what’s available for a while—to build consistency before upgrading the resources. What truly amused me was when she went to her godfather (a former sales head) for advice on managing the kids instead of me, a expert in the education field. Isn’t that what real connection is about? You can be a subject-matter expert, but does your audience trust you to solve their problems? This evening left me introspecting:] - Am I incorporating these lessons into my work and life? - How do I enable my team to grow beyond just dictating solutions? - And, most importantly, how do I keep appreciating the mentors who guide me, just as she does? Parental pride aside, watching her journey is a reminder that learning is a two-way street, no matter where we are in life. Oh, what a beautiful way to spend the evening!
