ISABEL KAZEMI, OD, FAAO, (University of California, Berkeley), Michelle Hoff, OD, Mindi Lewis, MA, ABOC, FNAO, MA (SightLine Ophthalmic Consulting) and Melody Tavakoli, OD, explain how understanding the unique needs of patients with #Presbyopia can lead to a satisfactory progressive addition lens wearing experience. #Optometrists may see patients with presbyopia on a routine basis — 128 million of these individuals live in the US alone — but not all clinicians or their staff consider progressive lens designs when caring for these patients.1,2 Since numerous #ProgressiveLens options exist, it may be easy for some #EyeCareProfessionals to limit their lens selection to only a few of these options. However, #ProgressiveLensFitting does not involve a one-size-fits-all approach. As common as #Presbyopia may be, these patients have unique needs, and understanding the science behind these advanced progressive lens designs can help clinicians to deliver a better overall experience. This understanding can also help clinicians save time and money due to less re-examinations and remakes due to nonadaptation. Seeing Spots? Here’s what floaters are 👀 Ever noticed tiny spots or thread-like shapes drifting across your vision? These are called floaters, and they’re typically caused by tiny clumps in the vitreous gel inside your eye. They’re quite common, especially as we age but there is a time when you need to pay extra attention to them: 🔹 If you suddenly notice an increase in floaters 🔹 If flashes of light accompany them These changes could signal a more serious retinal issue, so it’s crucial to see your optometrist as soon as you notice this. And if floaters are really bothering you, we can even explore nonsurgical options to help manage them 🙌🏼 #Optometrist #vision #eyehealth #eyeexam #Kincumber

➡️When switching from eyeglasses to contact lenses, it's important to understand that your prescription may need to be adjusted. This is because eyeglasses sit approximately 12 mm away from your eyes, while contact lenses rest directly on the surface of your eyes. This difference in the vertex distance (the space between the eye and the lens) can affect the way light is focused on the retina, which in turn alters the effective power of the lens. As a result, the prescription for eyeglasses is not directly transferable to contact lenses. To ensure the best vision correction and comfort, you'll need a specific prescription tailored for contact lenses. 📅Therefore, it's essential to schedule an appointment with your optometrist or ophthalmologist to get an updated and accurate contact lens prescription, which takes into account not just the refractive error, but also the fit of the lenses, the curvature of your cornea, and other factors specific to wearing contact lenses. #contactlens #visioncart #optometrist

👁️🗨️"Retinoscopy: See the light to understand vision." (Series 1-:1.2) ✅Retinoscopy is a crucial technique in optometry for assessing refractive errors. 🧿Here are some essential tips and points to consider for performing accurate retinoscopy: 4️⃣Lenses and Equipment 👉Lens Selection: ✴️Start with large steps (e.g., ±2.00 D) and fine-tune with smaller steps (e.g., ±0.25 D) as you approach neutralization. 👉Cycloplegia: ✴️In cases where accommodation might interfere with the results (especially in children), consider using cycloplegic agents to temporarily paralyze the accommodation. 👉Calibration: ✴️Ensure your retinoscope and lenses are clean and properly calibrated. 👉Consider Pupil Size: ✴️Be aware that pupil size can affect the visibility of the reflex. Larger pupils generally provide a more observable reflex, while smaller pupils can make the procedure more challenging. 👉Use of Trial Frames: ✴️Use trial frames to place lenses in front of the patient's eyes if a phoropter is not available, ensuring accurate lens placement and measurement. 5️⃣Patient Communication 👉Instructions: ✴️Clearly explain the procedure to the patient. Instruct them to look at the fixation target and remain as still as possible. 👉Feedback: ✴️Occasionally ask the patient if they are comfortable and if they can see the fixation target clearly. 6️⃣Follow-up 👉Verify Results: ✴️Always verify retinoscopy findings with subjective refraction to ensure the accuracy of the prescription. 👉Record Keeping: ✴️Document all findings thoroughly, including any deviations or abnormalities observed during the procedure. 👉Creating the Retinoscopy Cross: ✴️After neutralizing the horizontal meridian, rotate the retinoscope 90 degrees to align with the vertical meridian. Repeat the process of observing and neutralizing the reflex in the vertical meridian. The combination of the neutralizing lenses for the horizontal and vertical meridians forms the retinoscopy cross. #eyecare #eyehealthmatters #optometrist #retinoscopy #refractiveerror #staytuned #followformore #assessment
