I often have clients who struggle with the ways that organizational decisions impact their DEI goals and their marginalized employees. I created a lengthy document to take leaders through each step of making decisions equitably, but I also found that the leaders felt it was too wordy, too clunky, and they didn't think they'd use it when it was most needed. So I adapted it, made it an acronym (I love an acronym), and am now sharing it with you all: 🌟 **The ABCs of Equitable Decision Making** Many companies and organizations strive to be committed to driving positive change and fostering inclusivity in all that they do. With their Mission and Vision as guiding documents, we must recognize the importance of assessing the equity impacts of our decisions. 🎯 This Equitable Decision Making Tool supports orgs in: Assessing Equity Impacts: Evaluate major decisions for potential burdens or benefits on marginalized, underrepresented, and disproportionately impacted populations. Eliminating Disparities: Commit to ensuring that decisions actively contribute to the elimination and mitigation of disparities. For those who want the concise version, just remember the ABCs of Equitable Decision Making: -Advance Equitable Outcomes: Are we ensuring equitable opportunities and access to resources for all, particularly marginalized groups? If not, what steps will we take to do so? -Identify Burdens and Benefits: Are there possible disproportionate outcomes with a proposed decision? How do we know? How will we eliminate or mitigate them? Have we included appropriate parties in these considerations? How will we repair harm experienced by affected communities? -Communicate: What is our plan for clear and constant communication, conveying equity considerations and restorative measures? When will decisions be reassessed to further reduce impact? What do you think? What would you add? Let me hear in the comments below! Thanks to Pamela Chao, Dr. Joshua Moon Johnson, the Seattle Race and Social Justice Initiative, Tema Okun & Kenneth Jones, and the City of San Antonio for providing aspects of thought, reflection, and connection for this tool! If you missed today's panel discussion, "𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘿𝙀𝙄 𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙄𝙣 2025?" hosted by Pillar , you missed a great, action-focused discussion about the reality of current and future DEI efforts. During the discussion, industry disruptors & thought-leaders, John Graham Jr., Kalifa Oliver, Ph.D., and Fran Benjamin shared transformative insights on the evolution and future of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Here are the key takeaways that demand our attention: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - DEI has progressed from affirmative action to modern practices, but progress remains cyclical. - Risk aversion and legal concerns have led some organizations to rebrand or deprioritize DEI, despite data proving its continued necessity and value. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 - True change requires leaders to relinquish power and amplify marginalized voices. - We must move beyond allyship to abolition, addressing root causes and dismantling exploitative systems. - Leaders must prioritize humanity over the bottom line in decision-making. 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗘𝗜 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗡𝗔 - DEI should be intrinsic to an organization, not a separate initiative. - Focus on employee experience design to make DEI implicit in all processes. - Leverage data and technology to measure incremental progress, not just outcomes. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 - Real allies contribute, not just ask to be educated. - Allies must take risks, share platforms, and actively work to dismantle oppressive systems. - Centering the humanity of all employees is crucial for fostering inclusive, equitable workplaces. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿: 𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. How is your organization adapting its DEI strategies in response to the current socio-political climate? In a recent Forbes article written by Tanya Meck, she delves into the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision against race-based affirmative action and its broader impact on corporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Although the ruling does not directly impact the private sector, it has undeniably influenced corporate America's approach to DEI. The article compares this shift to the earlier scrutiny faced by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, raising pertinent questions about the future direction of DEI efforts in businesses. I thought this was an insightful read for leaders committed to advancing inclusive workplaces. Tanya highlights that despite political challenges, DEI continues to be supported by a significant portion of the workforce, reinforcing the importance of a diverse and inclusive environment. She provides great suggestions on maintaining resilient DEI strategies that align with core organizational values amidst a fluctuating political landscape. 🔗 Read Tanya's full article here - https://bit.ly/44hVXFb I invite you to share your thoughts 💭 - How is your organization adapting its DEI strategies in response to the current socio-political climate? #DiversityAndInclusion #CorporateCulture #StrategicLeadership
