WGC Co. was represented at the ESG Forum 2024, which held on November 6th, by our Managing Partner, Dr. Olusanya. The second edition of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Forum in Africa, the theme for this year was "The Carbon Market: Driving Investments for a Sustainable Africa." The 2024 Pan Africa ESG Forum seeks to accelerate sustainable practices and foster private-sector collaboration towards Africa's long-term sustainability goals. Bringing together industry leaders, government officials, financial institutions, and sustainability advocates, the forum explored actionable strategies for leveraging carbon markets to drive economic transformation and environmental conservation across the continent. WGC Co. was represented by two members of staff last week Friday at the Private Sector Forum Convening on the Adoption and Implementation of Gender-Responsive Procurement (GRP) Processes. This convening was organized by Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) with support from the African Development Bank Group, Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Nigeria, Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, and UN Women. A convening designed to harvest and document sector-specific and sector-agnostic strategies to collaboratively advance gender-responsive procurement practices, representatives from private sector organizations including FirstBank, ARM, Cutstruct, Nanny Academy, Oando, and more, were present. More than 1/3 of businesses are owned by women. And while over 20% of Gross Domestic Product is from Procurement spend, only about 1% are awarded to women-owned businesses, alluding to a clear gender imbalance. We were pleased to have been engaged by ARDA Development Communication Inc. to facilitate a comprehensive 2-day training on Gender-Sensitive Communication for Media Professionals as part of the "ADVANCE: Women in Political Participation in Nigeria" Project, funded by UN Women. This training took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 29th and 30th of October 2024 in Lagos. Our Managing Partner, Dunsin Olusanya, executed this training on behalf of WGC Co., taking the media professionals, including mainstream journalists and digital media creators/influencers, through modules on media and gender representation, gender-sensitive reporting, and the creation of a message development framework. At WGC Co., we believe in learning by DOING, and so participants engaged in practical sessions, developing gender-sensitive messaging by themselves, leveraging on the principles they had been taught. Gender Bias in Education is a real thing. Even more, it spills beyond the walls of the school and often has long-term impacts on the individuals affected. A girl who is told she cannot be Head Perfect and can only deputize a boy may grow up thinking that leadership positions are not meant for persons "like her". A boy who is told that Nursing is a job for women may have his dream truncated and his path redirected away from what he wants and could excel at. In both cases, these children are done a disservice because of gendered biases that are brought into education. Every year on October 11, the world commemorates the International Day of the Girl Child, a day set aside to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges they face around the world. The theme for this year is "Girls' Vision for the Futute," which presupposes that the future that girls inhabit should be one that they co-design and co-create. We were represented by our Associate Managing Partner at a Stakeholders Engagement session organized by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment (FMITI) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), under the National Advisory Committee on Electronic Commerce and Digital Economy (NACEDE) platform, with support from the Pan-African E-Commerce Initiative (PeCI) project implemented by GIZ. WGC Co.'s insights centered on "Gender Inclusion in the E-Commerce Sector," and how that impacts the current draft of the National E-Commerce Policy and Strategy (NEPS). This is towards ensuring that the policy is comprehensive and gender-sensitive in the ways that it supports the growth of e-commerce in Nigeria.
