To be successful with a thought leadership program, the best ability isn't the ability to come up with compelling topics. It isn't the ability to write engaging content. Nor is it the ability to leverage effective distribution channels. And it definitely isn't the ability to develop an audience. To be successful with a thought leadership program, the best ability is availability. Why? Availability helps you maintain visibility. Availability helps you build better relationships. Availability helps you capitalize on opportunities. Availability helps you build trust and credibility. When we mention #thoughtleadership, some people think it's one very complex thing. Four things to focus on when driving your thought leadership: 1. Niche. Choose an area and go deeper. Focus on one discipline and become known for it. 2. Audience. Know what works for your audience. The kind of content they need. 3. #content. This is the driver and soul of thought leadership. 4. Platform. What platforms will you be using? 5. Consistency. Irrespective of how good the above four points are, if you're not consistent, you won't reap the gains of thought leadership. I don't like the term 'thought leadership' and I'll tell you why: The term lacks a precise definition so as such, can be used as a catch all term for content creation. (Also, it just feels very jargon-y? 🤔) But more importantly for me, it can be a barrier to entry for potential content creators. Thought leadership feels buttoned up, corporate, requiring multiple sign offs and lots of scrutiny. Yes there's a place for that type of content, but I'm more excited by getting MORE smart folks to share their wisdom, not less. And to do that we need to make the content creation process more accessible.
