AMG-persbericht, 18 september 2024: AMG Critical Materials N.V. hosted the opening of its lithium hydroxide refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany earlier today. AMG Lithium B.V., which houses all of AMG’s lithium activities, has commissioned production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide at the first of its five modules planned for the site. Annual capacity of one module is 20,000 tons per year – enough for the batteries of around 500,000 electric vehicles (“EVs”). AMG’s first module is sold out and by 2030, AMG’s concept is to expand annual production up to 100,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide depending on market conditions. The recent Benchmark forecast, which has been revised downward, projects total demand for lithium in batteries in Europe to be 700k metric tons in 2030. AMG’s potential production of 100k metric tons (assuming all 5 modules), represents 14% market share of the projected applicable market in Europe for 2030. Dr. Heinz Schimmelbusch, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of AMG N.V. said, “With the refinery, we are the first mover, making a decisive contribution to securing the supply of the critical raw material lithium for the industry in Germany and Europe. The establishment of our own complete lithium value chain also contributes to the European Critical Raw Materials Act and offers greater independence for raw materials and critical materials.” Dr. Stefan Scherer, Managing Director of AMG Lithium GmbH, commented “AMG is forward looking – developing cutting-edge technology and materials to support the market development of next generation, sulfur-based all-solid-state-batteries closely together with the main players in the industry.” Lithium hydroxide is an important raw material for the production of cathode materials for batteries in EVs and thus for the path to climate-neutral mobility. With the refinery in Bitterfeld, AMG is primarily aiming to supply customers who manufacture in Europe.

LITHIUM 🔋: Evove and brinefield technology provider Zelandez have signed a partnership to develop a fully modular at-source production process right from raw brines to final lithium product used in batteries. The partnership aims to develop a fully modularized production process with best-in-class technologies, run field tests at a client project to corroborate and optimize performance, and then commercialize globally. Evove plans to commission the first modularized DLE plant in the fourth quarter of 2024, with scaled expansion to full production expected at that client’s site by 2027. The planned pilot site is located close to an upcoming battery manufacturing facility, helping to secure a domestic supply of lithium for the region. Chris Wyres, Evove’s chief executive, said: “We established an easily scalable, modular engineering approach to our DLE from the get-go, which makes Zelandez with their modular carbonation approach a natural partner for us.” “Often it’s the quality of the people that make a business successful, and Evove is no exception,” said Clint Van Marrewijk, the co-founder of Zelandez. “They have combined the significant technical expertise needed, with typical British doggedness, to develop some impressive lithium technology.” 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gXiuSS2M #lithium #lithiumtechnology #rawbrine #batteries

To make a good battery, you need fluorine, an element that is sourced from the mineral fluorspar. That presents a looming problem for China and its considerable efforts to dominate the global electric vehicle (EV) industry. The country is the dominant producer and consumer of fluorspar, but it’s rapidly running down its reserves. So, among the many critical minerals worth watching, this one is a standout. Although it’s hardly known to most people, fluorspar, also called fluorite, is used in many industrial processes, including making semiconductors, smelting, refrigeration, ceramics, coatings and so forth. Some uses, most notably per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are being phased out. Australia recognised the importance of fluorine in December by listing it as a critical mineral. The US, EU, Japan and others had already taken similar action. Because it’s needed for battery packs, modules and cells, fluorspar is called the ‘the stealth battery mineral’ in industry circles. Reflecting the growing interest in fluorspar, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, a global market information provider, recently launched a service supporting this ‘quiet achiever of the EV battery sector’. #fluorspar #fluorite #batteries #batterymetals #electrificiation

Lithium iron phosphate batteries have advantages of low cost, excellent safety, and long cycle life. With iterative upgrades in technology, the energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries has improved and with the large-scale application of module-free CTP, battery life has been greatly improved, as such lithium iron phosphate battery market share in the new energy vehicle segment is rapidly increasing. In 2023, China’s lithium iron phosphate batteries reached a cumulative installed capacity of 261.0GWh, a year-on-year increase of 42.1%, accounting for 67.3% of total installed capacity, becoming the mainstream choice of the market. In contrast, with its high energy density and output power, ternary batteries still occupy the high-end vehicle market segment. However, with the rise of lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries infiltrating into the new energy sector, ternary batteries will loose market share going forward. In order to maintain some market share, ternary battery companies are enhancing their product indicators and lowering their cash cost to keep the high-end vehicle market, while simultaneously the ternary cathode companies are carrying out large-scale R&D investment towards producing LMFP-composite (ternary) products. Investments exposed to the lithium-ion battery midstream industry, i.e chemical metal salts should comprehensively look into how the electric vehicle, battery material system is changing. Of course, outside of (1) LFP technology enhancements, (2) ternary composite products, (3) massive rise of LMFP, the other two looming elephants in the room are the companies currently qualifying sodium-ion batteries and solid-state batteries (semi-solid, quasi-solid, and all-solid) into the EV supply chain. I see many market participants promoting sky high demand charts, using absolutely ludicrous long-term pricing forecasts, including advocating for premium ESG-pricing, or the worst promoting obselete products, while pushing down competing technologies. The ideal scenario is to look at the whole market, companies, products, and pricing, to make an informed decision. https://lnkd.in/gdXFBYhA #lithium #nickel #cobalt #manganese #graphite #phosphate #lithiumbattery #electricvehicles
