If the ongoing impact of COVID-19 is not curtailed, excess mortality rates in the general population may remain up to 3% higher than pre-pandemic levels in the US and 2.5% in the UK by 2033, as per a report from the Swiss Re Institute.

Off the back of Swiss Re's latest report on excess mortality after COVID-19, we provided some insights to @ANZIIF on how things are playing out in this endemic state, particularly in the APAC region. This 'evolution' must be closely monitored and managed by the re/insurance industry – and most importantly, there must be a continued emphasis on the value of prevention and healthcare measures. 4 years after the pandemic began in 2020, many countries still report higher death rates. This trend persists despite differences in healthcare systems and population health. It holds even when accounting for population changes and the varied ways countries report and classify deaths, which complicates comparisons. There may also be under-reporting of excess mortality.

This short piece has a good, quantitative overview of the current state of health plan coverage of the new weight loss drugs. A few facts: obesity is a predictor of other, costly medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, as this piece from the Mayo Clinic makes clear (https://lnkd.in/gdVMdqZx). For numerous reasons, including genetics and the body's adaptations to changes in caloric intake, non-medicinal weight loss efforts are notoriously unsuccessful, particularly over the longer-term. Therefore, the evidence is accumulating that treating obesity PREVENTS the occurrence of other diseases which both cost a lot of money to treat and substantially increase mortality risk while decreasing people's quality of life. Nonetheless, as these data make clear, although many health plans will cover weight-loss drugs once someone has diabetes or heart disease (although even here the coverage is much less than 100%), many fewer plans cover obesity treatment as a preventive measure. Once again, third party health plan administrators have signaled their complete disdain for people's welfare and lifespan. #healthbenefits #health #morbidity #weightloss #diabetes #healthinsurers

Although the concept of preventive health comes to the fore frequently today, it is not easy to say that concrete steps have been taken in this field and rapid adaptations can be made. Insurance companies are one of the most impartial and important stakeholders in this field. Just like our home insurer wants us to buy a fire detector to prevent our house from burning down, living longer and healthier is one of the main goals of health and life insurance. Because getting sick less and living longer than expected is essential for insurance companies to make money, preventive health has become more important to them. Swiss reinsurance company Swissre stated in its study that protecting metabolic health is one of the areas that insurance companies should pay attention to. #obesity #insuretech #insurance #diabetes https://lnkd.in/dSDbF4Nc

📢 Excited to share our latest research publication! Forecasting mortality rates is essential for assessing life insurance company solvency, especially in times of disruption like COVID-19. While the Lee–Carter model is widely used in mortality modeling, our research explores an innovative approach using the Generalized Autoregressive Score (GAS) model with the COM–Poisson distribution. By analyzing mortality data from 29 countries, we found that the COM–Poisson model outperforms traditional distributions like Poisson, binomial, and negative binomial in forecasting accuracy. The GAS model’s one-step forecasting capability, combined with the flexibility of the COM–Poisson distribution, offers a robust solution for modeling time-varying mortality rates and non-conventional data distributions. This research highlights the potential of the COM–Poisson GAS model as a powerful tool for improving mortality rate predictions and addressing diverse data challenges in the life insurance sector. #Research #MortalityForecasting #InsuranceSolvency #COMPoisson #GASModel #TimeSeries #DataScience https://lnkd.in/emuT-v85

Cancer rates among under-50s in UK have risen 24% since 1995, figures show | Cancer | The Guardian The number of people under 50 being diagnosed with cancer in the UK has risen 24% in two decades, a sharper increase than any other age group, according to figures experts say are likely linked to soaring obesity levels, cheap junk food and inactivity. Meanwhile, there is mounting concern that a global epidemic of cancer among young people may be emerging. It is believed that poor diets, physical inactivity and obesity are likely to be among the factors behind the surge in cancer rates among young people in the UK. One of the main reasons people look for health insurance is to have access to the Cancer Medications not readily available on the NHS.
