Pitching stories or op-eds tied to planned events: awesome! Pitching stories or op-eds tied to planned events 24 hours before those events: less awesome. Give journalists time. This is also where knowing an outlet's rhythms come into play. At PR Daily, we publish all our stories in the morning. So if you send me something in the afternoon, it typically won't publish until the next morning. So you're giving audiences only a few hours to discover the content before it's obsolete. That's not helpful to your PR goals, either.

“PR is just spin.” That’s the cliché, isn’t it? But it’s also a narrow view of what public relations really is. PR isn’t about sugarcoating problems or bending the truth. It’s about shaping perceptions with transparency and accountability. The real goal? Build trust. Earn credibility. Not just craft a flawless narrative. When done right, PR doesn’t shy away from setbacks. It shares the full picture—even when it’s not pretty. Great PR isn’t just about pushing out good news. It’s about fostering open communication and meaningful engagement. In the end, authentic storytelling beats spin every time. -- Ready to elevate your messaging with substance, not fluff? Let's talk. Hit "Follow" for no-nonsense strategies that build credibility.

Some thoughts about the press release: Did you know that press releases were invented in 1906 by Ivy Lee, who is known as the father of modern public relations? Lee wrote the release to inform the public about a train accident that killed 50 people in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The release's success led to other businesses using press releases to share information with the public. Nearly 100 years later, the press release is still a standard tool for announcing everything from product releases to executive shuffles. But just because it's standard doesn't mean it's the best practice in all cases. One of my approaches with clients and internal partners isn't to start with the tactic, such as a release. Instead we start from these questions: -What is the business problem we are trying to solve? -Who needs to know? -What are the best ways to reach those audiences? -What does success look like? Taking that approach, issuing a press release often isn't the answer. Don't get me wrong - sometimes a press release is required for legal reasons, such as a partnership announcement. But it isn't always the best approach and it shouldn't, in my view, be the first tool we pull out of our toolkit. What do you think? #PR #pressrelease #communications
