Boatwright has been interim CEO since August following Brian Niccol’s departure for Starbucks. Prior to his stint as interim CEO, Boatwright served as chief operating officer beginning in 2017. The story below shows how critical CLARITY is to the success of anything. MISSING THE BASICS For decades, McDonald’s ruled fast food with their Quarter Pounder burger. In the 1980s, a rival chain cooked up an idea to dethrone the company with the golden arches. A&W offered the Third Pound Burger—larger than McDonald’s—and sold it for the same price. Even more, A&W’s burger won numerous blind taste tests. But the burger bombed. Nobody bought it. Eventually, they dropped it from the menu. Research revealed that consumers misunderstood the math and thought the Third Pound Burger was smaller than the Quarter Pounder. A grand idea failed because people missed the basics. Leaders need to stop assuming people know what's on their minds or the meaning of their words. An organization or community is made up of people with diverse backgrounds, orientation, religion, ethnicity, culture, and exposure. Even McDonald's doesn't get it right some days. I received this cup today as I went through the drive thru and it made me laugh. Was this how Friday was going to go today. I chuckled thinking about the leadership conversations that must have taken place to still use the cups. Did the local restaurant call corporate? Did anyone talk to Branding? Is this an isolated issue or did all the cups shipped across the nation have this mistake? I can only assume they didn't have other cups or had they have gone through them already? So, then was the decision point to not serve drinks at all because there were no proper cups or still use the cups because they are still functioning and serve the purpose? Is the brand strong enough to manage through a mistake. What would the consumer choose? For the diet coke aficionados out there like me, you know that McDonalds has the best fountain diet coke hands down. I would take the diet coke in any cup. What would your company do? Would you criticize your local office if they chose to use the "mistake" cups? #mcdonalds

Why you MUST be a DOMAIN expert The recent firing of Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan and the hiring of Food veteran Brian Niccol of Chipotle fame is a classic case in point. First, the PAGAAR (Salary) Non Domain: Laxman When Starbucks hired Narasimhan from UK-based consumer products group Reckitt in 2022, he was offered a package valued at more than $28mn. Domain: Niccol Starbucks has awarded its new chief executive, Brian Niccol, cash and stock, potentially worth more than $100mn. This is one of the largest hiring packages in US corporate history and is four times larger than the sign-on deal offered to his ousted predecessor. WHY? Domain brings experience, skills, depth and breadth: Niccol. In 2018, when Chipotle was reeling from multiple food poisoning outbreaks that had sickened 1,100 people, the company called Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol to turn things around. I've attached his experience in the pic. GENERALISTS remain Generalists: Laxman There were signs from the start that Narasimhan was a strange choice. Although he had no previous executive-level restaurant experience, he consulted for years with various consumer companies while at the consulting firm McKinsey. He joined from British consumer-goods company Reckitt Benckiser, not a retail or restaurant company. Laxman had an awkward, public-facing persona, exemplified by a trainwreck of an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, in which he came across like a McKinsey consultant (which he was for years). His cringeworthy turnaround plan, “Triple Shot Reinvention With Two Pumps,” was soon followed by the chain’s worst quarter and its largest single-day drop in market value.
