Inspiring, unpredictable, and frequently draining; being an entrepreneur is like riding a roller coaster. Passion, vision, resilience, and the art of negotiation are like juggling balls - you never know where one will land. I recently read Harvard Business Essentials' "Negotiations", and it reinforced just how vital negotiation skills are for every aspect of running a business. From securing funding and landing clients to building partnerships and managing teams, negotiation is the thread that weaves through every decision we make. Some of the most important things I learned are: 1. Be Well-Prepared: Going into a negotiation ill-prepared is like donning no armor. The key to a good end is having clear objectives, being aware of your counterpart's interests, and being able to anticipate any obstacles. 2. Establishing Connections: Relationship development is more important than winning or losing negotiations. Anyone can become an ally if you find something in common, listen carefully, and build trust. 3. Saying "No": Having the ability to walk away is sometimes the most potent bargaining tool, which may sound paradoxical. Being able to confidently state "no" and know your limits safeguards your interests and may even result in more favorable conditions. The book also reminded me that negotiation is a continuous learning process. There's always room for improvement, whether it's mastering new techniques or refining our communication skills. Being an entrepreneur is more than just having a great idea - it's about navigating a complex landscape of challenges and opportunities. People will not listen to you, nor will they truly engage with you, until they feel seen or heard. And it's difficult to accept this when you don’t feel acknowledged by them. __ I'm coaching a client with a relatively new business through a challenging negotiation with a large group. Sudden disagreements arose over a contract that initially seemed clear. The client needed this contract. I spent considerable time discussing logistics and strategic approaches with my client. She nodded, agreed, and understood what needed to be done. Yet there was no decision, no change, no action. When we spoke, I felt there was no energy in the room. Instead, there was frustration, hurt, and concern. I had to pause and ask myself: What is one true thing in this very moment? The answer came There is no listening to the mind before there is emotional clarity. So, what can I do right now? Help them achieve emotional clarity. It may seem challenging to differentiate between mind and emotion at crossroads. The mind often dominates with a kind of righteous energy, focused on cutting through issues before they're fully resolved. We managed to untangle the emotional complexities of the relationship with their business counterparts. There were several overreactions from people on both sides. With newfound emotional clarity, my client was able to discuss the contract with those who initially refused to sign. She talked honestly and directly about issues that were difficult, with sensitivity and respect. The contract was signed the following day. This experience reminded me that people will not listen to you nor will they truly engage with you until they feel seen or heard. It's not useful to keep repeating logical points when a person is emotionally absent because the underlying issues are not addressed. When I notice my own overreactions I tune into the essence of a situation and focus on resolving what's been disrupted emotionally. Only then, I bring ideas and mental concepts to address the issue. It's true what they say, you can only guide others as far as you've gone yourself. That's why a mentor with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience is so valuable. They've completed the puzzle, connecting mind and heart to create wisdom. Imagine a 10-floor building, where each floor represents a level of your business or personal growth. As a student, you might only be on the second floor, so you can only guide others to that same level. The same goes for the depth and quality of your relationships with others. If your relationship with yourself is on the sixth floor, you can only accept others to that level. To go deeper, you need to do the inner work. If you're looking to improve the quality of your business relationships, start by improving your relationship with yourself. Find a mentor who has both the theory and experience to guide you.
