🎙️LATEST PODCAST: Solving the Gold Coast housing crisis: an urban planning perspective - Interview with Patrick Hefferan, Urbis A seasoned urban planner with over 20 years’ experience, this week’s podcast guest Patrick Hefferan provides an expert and nuanced perspective on how to address one of the Gold Coast’s most pressing issues: housing supply. Paradoxically, Patrick believes our housing crisis is actually a good problem to have – it means people are wanting to live, work and play on the Gold Coast, and the economy is accelerating. But where do we go from here? In a free-ranging conversation, we talk about issues such as the need for non-traditional housing types and purpose-built student accommodation, ‘build to rent’ development and how it works, incentivisation for developers, and how transport and sustainability issues impact housing design. This is also a great episode for aspiring urban planners; learn how this multi-disciplinary calling is shaping the city, the economy and our future. 🎧 Listen on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gAAcEazN

"If you're working on urban planning policy, and you're not contemplating or integrating how urban development will respond to that, you're not doing your job," our CEO, Kalen Anderson, says of the critical importance of public sector planners working collaboratively with the industry, and other key stakeholders, to build housing and to shape communities. She added, "Policies are only good if they affect change. You can write anything on a piece of paper, but if you're not getting the results you want, or getting an unintended consequence, it's a pointless policy." In Edmonton, city builders are practical in their approach, and are innovating each and every day to respond to a whole host of external factors. The imperative to deliver on housing, for example, has fortified Council, Administration, industry, and community to rally around zoning and permit processes to expedite development. Thanks Canadian Real Estate Forums for the opportunity to share our industry's insights through your podcast! #EREF Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/g_9GA4GB

The influence of cities on the health of their inhabitants is not a new phenomenon. However, it is an aspect that is as relevant as in the first stages of formal urbanization during the 19th century. The focus of urban planners should shift towards considering the consequences of their actions on human health and well-being. Issues such as inadequate housing, poverty, stress, pollution, and limited access to employment opportunities and essential services all have significant impacts on public health, as explored in Hugh Barton and Catherine Tsourou's book, Healthy Urban Planning. If you believe that your city has room for improvement in these areas, do not hesitate to contact us so that we can work together to create a plan and public policies to follow, and adapt to the needs of the local government. https://lnkd.in/ds6GRiuX
