Drawing on his lengthy experience as a leadership coach, author Simon Court argues in his book Founder’s Legacy that it is leadership that sets apart the winning start-ups from the losers. In particular, he says that successful founders are those that realise that all will not be straightforward and learn from their experience. “Learning to lead is about personal growth and becoming the most valuable version of yourself you can be. When you write a book you have a perspective that you want to share - and the process of writing helps you to clarify that perspective. As American novelist Flannery O'Connor put it “I write to discover what I know.” Based on what I had learned over the last couple of decades about leadership, and how founders learn to lead, I wrote the book that I wanted to read, Founder's Legacy - Fifty Game-Changing Leadership Lessons for Building a Great Business. https://lnkd.in/edrhb7y5 Once other people start reading the book and share their perspectives on it interesting things happen. This brought some revelations for me as a new author. One of those people was Roger Trapp, a journalist with a longstanding interest in leadership. I really enjoyed his take on the book in his Forbes article, re-shared here. He says "So the lessons that Court sets out to help leaders of start-ups build lasting businesses are not limited to such enterprises in much the same way that leaders of large corporations (the successful ones at least) have come to recognise that the organizations for which they are responsible have to be run a bit more like their smaller counterparts than used to be the case." Founders need to think like leaders. Just finished "The Great CEO Within" by Matt Mochary. What great insights for organizational leaders to use as tested frameworks to give their team a leg up. One of my favorites is the RAPID decision-making list of people needed to make and implement an important decision: R - Recommend: Who proposed the issue and solution A - Agree: The people whose input must be incorporated P - Perform: Those that are responsible to enact the decision I - Input: Department leaders whose processes will be affected D - Decide: The ultimate decision maker R reaches out to A, P, and I to solicit collaboration. This is complied and presented to D with R, A, P, I available for discussion if needed. At some point, those of us on the leadership transformation journey come to understand that both our triumphs and our setbacks provide fertile ground for learning. Adversity therefore can serve us: it holds valuable insights about what and who matter most to us and why.   As we learn to chart the course through our more challenging times, it's essential to individually and collectively reflect on our experiences, curating lessons that will guide our leadership paths. Regular review of these lessons can help us deliberately choose which to carry forward.  Additionally, fostering a culture where vulnerability is embraced becomes integral collaboration.
