As a nurse involved in emergency care, the surge in youth knife injuries has been alarming. One night, a young man came in with a severe bleed that could have been controlled if his friends knew basic first aid. This pivotal moment inspired me to create YourStance—a project teaching young people critical life-saving skills like CPR and bleed control. YourStance began with the goal of filling a critical gap in our community's ability to respond to violent emergencies. Since 2019, we’ve grown to a team of 300 dedicated medical volunteers, reaching over 3300 young people across London through nearly 300 workshops. Our "Zero Responder" sessions teach essential skills that empower youth to act before professional help arrives. Our mission is to reduce the impact of youth violence and build trust between young people and healthcare providers. We aim to change perceptions and provide essential life-saving knowledge, equipping youth with the ability to make a difference in critical moments. Despite challenges like compassion fatigue among healthcare professionals and logistical hurdles, the impact has been profound. Participants report feeling more prepared for emergencies and have gained valuable new skills. Looking ahead, we are determined to expand our reach and continue making a positive impact. We plan to offer more advanced responder training for professionals working with at-risk youth, broadening our mission of empowerment and education. There’s a growing demand from non-medical professionals to join our training, and we’re excited to include them in our mission. YourStance is more than just a project; it is a movement towards a safer, more informed community. It stands as a testament to the power of education and the profound impact it can have on saving lives. As healthcare professionals, we have a unique opportunity to make a difference. I invite more people to join us in this vital work, supporting and expanding our efforts to create a brighter future for vulnerable youth in London. YourStance is an extraordinary organisation and their Impact Report demonstrates just how important these critical, these life-saving skills can be. Some harrowing stats for sure but very encouraging to see how they are extending their reach in the face of rising youth violence. Well done to the whole team at YourStance.
