Today we take a look at the average sector length of Europe's biggest (U)LCCs. AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data for August 2023 and August 2024 shows that Jet2.com and Jet2holidays and SunExpress have the longest average flights. This is not surprising as both are primarily 'holiday' airlines taking northern Europeans to southern Europe. These carriers will typically only manage four sectors per day on their aircraft. The likes of Ryanair and easyJet will usually aim for at least six sectors per day per aircraft. Vueling Airlines (lots of domestic flights in Spain) and Volotea (lots of domestic flights in France, Greece, Italy and Spain) have the shortest average sector lengths. Nine of these 12 airlines saw an increase in average sector length since last summer, the exceptions being the French part of Transavia, Vueling and Wizz Air. Eurowings, Pegasus Airlines, Norwegian

The advantage of being open 24 hours a day: 7 departures with 4 different airlines to Antalya within 3.5 hours at night, a common occurrence at Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) in the next few weeks. This is of great benefit to our airline partners, as they have full operational flexibility and can increase the utilisation of their aircraft. The question is often asked whether people want to fly at this time of night: yes, holidaymakers like these times because they gain almost an extra day at their destination by arriving early and returning late. Irish ULCC Ryanair plans to cut its German flight offering by an additional 12%, which equals 1.8 million seats and 22 canceled routes, for summer 2025. Ryanair will close its bases in Dortmund, Dresden and Leipzig. The airline will reduce Hamburg services by 60%, Berlin services by 20%, and will reduce services by 10% on other routes. In a February interview with Aviation Week, Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary told me, “We are very content to see German traffic fall. We would like to see German traffic fall for another year or two, [and] air fares rise dramatically for a year or two. And that [after two years], we think the German regional airports will come to us and say, ‘please Ryanair fly in here. Airports like Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Bremen, Nurnberg.’” My story now at the Aviation Week Network #hofmannaviation #luftfahrtexperte Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline Boeing ACI EUROPE Ralph Beisel Julian Jäger Airlines for Europe (A4E) #Ryanair Andreas Gruber #Boeing

It is half term, so my children and I are off to Albania for two days. The FO on the outbound leg is the always enthusiastic Michael Ashworth AFHEA. The aircraft is five-month-old G-WUKV, a 239-seat A321neo. WUK has removed its last A320s, so it is an all-A321 fleet (ceos and neos). This week, #tirana is London Luton Airport’s fourth most-served international destination. There are 21 departures with 2- to 4-daily flights. From London generally, there are 39 weekly services. Wizz Air’s offering is joined by 14 by Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline from London Stansted Airport (new) and 4 by British Airways from Heathrow. Ouch. It’s a real bloodbath in the winter, hence paying just £25pp for the return. Yet our flight is still only half full. Great for us, of course! Cheers! #airlines #aviation #uk

We’ve looked at the six largest airlines operating domestic capacity across the whole of Europe. Since 2019 most of those airlines have remained consistent in their production, but not Ryanair who have increased their domestic flying by over one-third (38.2%); see the chart below. So where has that capacity growth occurred? Find out, and see how Ryanair's presence affects others in the domestic market: https://hubs.li/Q02kn4Cq0 #Ryanair #Travel #Aviation #Airlines

Lufthansa - a case of expensive responsible aviation Up to €72 per flight will be charged by Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings) - to partially cover expenses for new eco regulations. All EU flights will be affected from Jan. 1, 2025. Great, but... some flights within Europe cost less than €72. Will the more cost-effective and agile competitors squeeze major flag carriers out of business? Are we conscientious enough to fund the eco transition? #airlines #netzero #carboncredits #saf #ecoregulations

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays has announced it will start flying from London Luton Airport from next April. The airport is currently dominated by Europe's three biggest (U)LCCs - Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air. These three carriers have accounted for more than 95% of seat capacity at the airport since the pandemic. The only other airlines that have operated regularly at Luton in 2024 have been TUI Airways, EL AL Israel Airlines, FLYONE, SunExpress and Romania's Dan Air. Jet2.com's 35 weekly departing flights next summer is likely to make it the airport's fourth biggest carrier with just over 3% of flights. According to AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data, in August 2024 easyJet offered 502 weekly departures, Wizz Air 391 and Ryanair 154.

Last week, we reported on the Top 20 ACMI customers, providers and aircraft variants. We have also decided to compare June 2024 to the same month last year to see how the market changed. Avia Solutions Group (Avion Express, SmartLynx Airlines Ltd, AirExplore, BBN Airlines Türkiye, KlasJet) remains the leader of ACMI. (Eight ACMI airlines out of the Top 20 now belong to ASG.) Three ASG airlines in the top 20 grew by more than 100%: BBN Airlines Türkiye (137%), KlasJet (118%), and Smartlynx Airlines Malta (117%). New in the Top 20 are: Bulgaria Air (16), BBN Airlines Türkije (17) and Electra Airways (20). It is interesting to see that only four airlines in the Top 20 did not grow compared to last year: CityJet (-7 %), Helvetic Airways (-3 %), Smartwings (-8 %), and Heston Airlines (-23%). Take a look at the full overview below. We track all short- and long-term ACMI contracts, with weekly deliveries that cover the last seven days' ACMI flights. Istanbul and Melbourne will initially operate three times a week via Singapore, with the airline planning to fly non-stop upon the arrival of new long-range aircraft. The inaugural flight was flown by a Boeing 777, with Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the flagship Airbus A350 aircraft to take over the service later this month.
