School and work are educating the creativity out of us A 1968 NASA study by George Land on divergent thinking found: 98% of five-year-olds were "creative geniuses" This dropped to 30% by age 10 And just 12% by age 15 And by adulthood only 2% fall into the category I don't imagine the results would be that different today School and work encourage convergent thinking - getting to a single answer. And over time we lose our natural ability for more divergent thinking. It will take big shifts to change this at the societal level. But luckily at the individual level this is much easier. We can reform the patterns and habits to be more creative - we have to be intentional about it though

Communication is a significant issue for companies, and especially for HR. According to the observations of the Process Communication Model (PCM), a communication tool developed by NASA, our communication is negative 80% of the time. Thanks to 🧞♀️Axel Øreste from Abscons Consulting, who taught us more about this subject during one of our webinars—the recording is in the comments section! Here are the elements to foster optimal communication within your team:

What is your business Vision? And how does that Vision drive the Mission to it? It is easier to assemble the best people to accomplish challenging tasks than to pursue something boring. Indeed, you can recruit more talented people for a journey to the moon, than to go and dig a ground, because going to the moon is more challenging, and also more exciting. Think about it: nearly every kid will like to work for NASA, the US space agency, over one tunnel-boring company because NASA inspires. In this lecture, I will explain how crafting a winning Vision can help you to attract and retain the best, and in that process, you can win the market. Aspirational vision with a purpose built into it will activate all the necessary factors of production, from capital to labour, and beyond, at scale. “I want to organize the world’s information” is more inspiring than “I am building a website to store data”. I want “to build a digital human community for all people in the world” is better than “I am creating a website where people share photos and videos”. What is your business vision? How can you create a great one? Join me tomorrow at Tekedia Mini-MBA Live as I teach on “Creating and Executing Strong Business Vision” https://lnkd.in/eZ9RDETQ

This study by NASA in the 1960s will make you rethink everything you know about what makes a genius! NASA commissioned a study to understand what constitutes one. George Land and his team began by testing a group of five-year-olds on their creativity—defining genius as the ability to use creative imagination to solve problems. The results were astonishing: 98% of these five-year-olds qualified as geniuses. But when they tested the same group five years later, the percentage had plummeted to 30%. By age fifteen, it dropped to just 12%. Eventually, when they surveyed adults, only 2% still qualified as geniuses. What happened? According to George Land, the culprit was clear: education. He believed that uncreative behaviour and thinking are learned. A system that takes 98% of creative geniuses and reduces them to 2% is something we need to rethink. I heard about this experiment a few weeks ago and I can’t get it out of my head. I’ve always believed that creativity is a fundamental part of who we are. But knowing that it’s systematically drained out of us is shocking. So, how do we build creativity in a world designed to kill it? Here are three steps I’ve been focusing on: ➡️Encouraging Curiosity: I’m making it a point to ask more questions and explore ideas without judgment. Curiosity fuels creativity, and I want to keep that flame alive, both in myself and others. ➡️Embracing Failure: I’ve learned that failure is not the end but a step towards innovation. It’s easier to be free with my creativity when I’m not attempting to impress. I’m encouraging those around me to do the same. ➡️Diversifying Experiences: I’m pushing myself to step outside my comfort zone more often. Exposure to different environments, cultures, and disciplines expands our thinking, and I believe this is where creativity thrives. Creativity isn’t just for artists—it’s the key to innovation in any field And I think this raises an important question How can we nurture creativity rather than stifle it? Because the truth is, we’re all born with the potential to be geniuses. We just need to preserve it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. #innovation #education #creativity #leadership
