"What should my secondary/supporting experiment metrics be?" ☝️ Super common question I get asked and here's my answer... To roll out the change you're testing, you want to know: 1. That you've created customer value 2. That you've done so in a viable way 3. How you achieved these (1 in particular) 4. That outcomes are aligned with overall company strategy Secondary (or supporting) metrics are all about number (3): knowing HOW you created customer value (because random wins aren't a sustainable growth strategy!). Example: - You believe replacing customer reviews with AI summaries in a tab on a website's product page will be more informative for customers. - You test the change and your primary metric (say "purchasing users") goes green! Woohoo! - However, you were smart and included "review tab views" as a secondary metric because you expect to see this go up too if your thinking was right. - Oh no, "review tab views" has actually gone down! How could it be? - Just one alternate hypothesis: customers disliked the AI summaries, stopped wasting time reading reviews, and had a faster path to purchase. The point is, sometimes we get great results for the wrong reasons. Next time you run an experiment... Use secondary metrics to really understand what's going on and what your customers value (or don't)! 🙌
