After being immersed in a video titled “City of the Future: Singapore”, a documentary by National Geographic, I noticed that Singapore seems to have a definite projection of which and how technology is used. Instead of rushing the desire for the newest technology or digitalizing everything, it answers each of society’s perennial needs to design the city. Taipei is no. 12 in the world for no. of billionaire residents*. (source: Infographic by Besta) You probably guessed most of these billionaires are in tech or manufacturing. But what's their advantage being in Taiwan? I arrived to Taiwan in 1999 as a lighting intern. I was impressed by this hub for electronics manufacturing. What makes Taiwan different is things are done faster here. I can just take the subway to visit clients and get problems solved in person. It’s very different from countries in the West where everything is far and it’s not easy to meet people within short notice. If you are sourcing or designing a product, here’s how you can take advantage of electronics manufacturing hubs in Asia like Taiwan: 1. Get over to Taiwan Set up an office or team in the hub to build easier communication and faster response times. This lets you build relationships and handle issues in real-time, and even make lifelong friendships. 2. When you’re there, take the subway! Embrace public transportation in cities like Taipei. Or even travel like the locals, on scooters. This lets you quickly get around between meetings, factories, and suppliers. 3. Make friends on the ground Take time to build relationships with local partners, suppliers, and clients. Meet up often at dinner, karaoke, and other regular face-to-face meetings. It leads to better collaboration, trust, and faster resolution of issues. 4. Learn the local business culture In Asia, weather, food and cities look very different. We are very proud to have successfully opened in Beijing yesterday and will soon be communicating about this giant new step. Reflecting on a series of ongoing start-up challenges, I’m proud of how they’ve shaped Sensory Odyssey. Steering this pioneering project often felt like navigating through a permanent storm. Yet, every challenge we overcame only strengthened our resolve, mimicking the infinite examples of resilience we find in nature. Our journey has been enriched by collaborations with over 300 talented individuals — artists, designers, scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and behind-the-scenes production and management staff — each adding their brilliance to this unique venture. The foundation for our efforts was laid through a symbiotic collaboration with the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, their knowledgeable scientists, and the dedicated, meticulous support from IFF in creating our fragrances. This partnership has been crucial in establishing a visceral connection with our audience, fostering deep emotional engagement, and developing a keen curiosity to learn everything we can about the living world. The search for the optimal flexibility in our business model led us to create a more compact exhibition model, first implemented at the Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro , allowing us to welcome 4000 visitors per day, three times more people we could host in our previous versions in Paris and Singapore. For contacts in Singapore, here’s an invitation to attend one of my favourite speaking events, being held at The Projector, the independent cinema located at Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road. Even better (or worse) I’ll be one of the nine people on stage, taking turns to deliver a rapid-fire talk on a wide range of topics. PechaKucha is a global speaker series with a unique format. Each speaker is required to have 20 image-based slides. Each slide is on the screen for 20 seconds and is set to automatically rotate. So the speaker needs to keep the story moving because the presentation only lasts 400 seconds — six minutes and forty seconds. It’s like TEDx on steroids.
