IIT Kanpur will now be admitting 6 students into their CSE branch for BTech through Maths and Informatics Olympiads. - 3 seats for top performers in INMO/IMO - 3 seats for top performers in INOI/IOI This is a big change that is going to help retain talented students in India. Mark my words this is going to bring a big change in not just ICPC performances of Indian teams but also in Math and CS research. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gAKuqpeg There are already other colleges such as IIT Gandhinagar, Chennai Mathematical Institute, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi that either give direct admissions or give bonus points to students who reach a decent stage in computing/informatics olympiads. As a competitive programmer, I always hoped for this to happen someday. Really happy that some of the brightest students from our country will now get the much needed recognition. There are other branches as well in which some seats have been reserved for the top students in other olympiads, which is again a big and positive change.
One of the remarkable decision in education sector. This facility is already available for INMO awardee in ISI ( Indian Statistical Institute) . Every IIT should adopt this.
Is it constitutionally allowed? Seems like a clear violation of affirmative action policy, can be pretty easily challenged in judiciary. 🤔
This is against Right to Equality. Do you think all students know or have access to participate in olympiads. Many students from rural areas don't even know about them. I understand this will prevent talent from going abroad by giving them due recognition but do you think reserving 6 seats per year will achieve the desired outcome. The problem of brain drain should be solved from its core rather than doing all these narrow sighted hacks.
Good move to attract & retain talented students! Whats holding back Top women colleges to implement this, why should they be left behind ? Such a commendable initiative!! 🤩
For specific departments like CSE, MnC etc, JEE Advanced shouldn't be the entry point for IITs where students have to study chemistry. For these branches, entry from Olympiads should be mandatory.
A step in the right direction to attract & retain talented students! Whats holding back other IITs to implement this, why should they be left behind ? I am now regretting that I should have prepared more for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad, rather than focusing on Chemistry for IIT JEE ☝️😅
This is really a great step taken by IIT kanpur

1wI posted about this yesterday and it is so good to see this happening. I am sure my post had no influence in this decision and it was a pure coincidence but the competitive programmer in me is really happy today: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/priyansh-agarwal_ever-wondered-why-india-doesnt-win-medals-activity-7258810980489469952-dPLe?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop
