‘Diversifying the Energy Sector: EDI initiatives that succeed’ - blog ✍🏻 Check out this blog from UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) looking back at their event that brought together 70 people from across energy and academia to discuss progress and challenges in delivering EDI projects. Our Head of PfW, Georgina Worrall, chaired a discussion on "What's next for EDI in energy?" where the excellent panellists delivered some critical insights and calls to action: 1. Make everyone feel welcome in the sector. Create new avenues for young people, with an open door to apprenticeships. 2. Minorities who feel able to speak up about their experiences may help to inspire others who feel different. 3. We shouldn’t forget that it’s often the people who are not in the room who need convincing. 4. Talk to young people, listen to them and don’t shy away from difficult topics like climate change. and fossil fuels. 5. Good quality data is the key to analysing what changes we need to make. 6. Organisations need to focus on support, workplace culture and representation. #MeettheYouth #YouthMonth #TeamEDP I am Siweze Sigodi, an intern in the Advisory division at EDP. I am passionate about renewable energy, it's a rapidly growing industry and I am grateful to be part of EDP, as it gives me a broader perspective on the #impact and importance of #renewableenergy. Q: Why do you think Economic Development (ED) is important in the South African context? A: We need to grow our economy to create more #jobs. By so doing people will afford paying for social services like hospital bills, taxes, transport and education and to not only depend on the government to provide social services. Which will ultimately improve their #standardofliving. #thefuture #youth #youthmonth #youthmatter

Big challenges ahead if we don't address the #GreenSkills gap. "....young people believe a lack of available job opportunities, experience, and green skills are the main barriers to securing a green job." Solving this is critical if we're to get back on track in the #NetZero transition and align #careers with #prosperity and a #SustainableFuture. Green Careers Week takes place between November 4 and 9. It's designed to promote careers in green industries and to drive up aspirations, especially for young people. Of course, this fits perfectly within my own business model. The Spark Group exists to promote a new green workforce and to work with schools and colleges to help young people to discover their spark. Spark Projects aim to create a new workforce to support green industries in my home area of North Staffordshire and across the UK. The government's Net Zero Strategy has an ambition to support 440,000 green jobs by 2030. The Green Alliance say "young people are enthusiastic about working in green jobs, viewing them as modern, high skilled and interesting. "The net zero transition will create demand for new jobs and skills across all sectors of the UK economy. New entrants to the green jobs market will be needed to meet this demand." In addition, there are there are currently 794,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 not in education, employment or training (NEET), according to the Office of National Statistics. My vision involves supporting these youngsters into careers - are you ready to join me in the green revolution? #ecofriendly #greencareers #jobs

We will need a new, big, powerful, diverse STEM workforce in order to build and deploy climate solutions. To bring that workforce to employers fast enough, we need new talent pipelines that are scalable, equitable, and lead enough people into climate roles. Schools, professional bodies, education regulators, and other workforce institutions are willing to embrace the demands of the new economy and build these talent pipelines together. We are announcing our first 10-month regional pilot of this approach, focused on the Advanced STEM talent pipeline in New York and New Jersey. We have assembled an incredibly high-powered and diverse working group of exactly the right organizations with the power and willingness to build this together, with Work on Climate's help as a convener and facilitator. It is hard to believe that just a few months ago this working group was merely an idea. Check out more details in the blog post! P.S. We are in the early stages of building out our second regional workforce development pilot, focused on decarbonizing the light manufacturing supply chain and small/medium businesses in Justice40 areas in the US. Hit me up if this interests you or you have connections in that space!
We are so excited to announce the launch of the Advanced STEM in Cleantech Working Group, a collaborative initiative bringing together over 30 stakeholders from a variety of sectors across New York and New Jersey. Our main goal? Supercharge the growth and diversity of the cleantech talent pool in the region. By joining forces, we aim to bridge the STEM talent gap in the region, as well as provide a blueprint for the workforce transformation in other sectors and regions. Learn more about the Working Group’s main goals, activities, and participants: https://lnkd.in/gkk3KfnY

Approximately one week ago, I had the privilege of participating in a significant meeting, "Driving Social Impact on Campus", as both a panelist and an anchor. This gathering convened various stakeholders from diverse sectors to address pertinent inquiries concerning effecting social impact within our communities. It is imperative to acknowledge the current era we find ourselves in and recognize the proactive stance of change-makers who are challenging conventional paradigms. Our collective efforts are geared towards rectifying societal shortcomings. Don't be too late to join the train. The substantial contributions made by each participant during the meeting are poised to resonate for years to come. Several key takeaways merit attention: - Effective communication is paramount in any social impact endeavor. - For any meaning change to occur, people must be made aware of the problems in the society. - Environmental stewardship is a universal responsibility. - Embracing technology plays a pivotal role in advancing social impact initiatives. The world is a global village. - Adopting a broader perspective beyond individual endeavors fosters innovation. - Collaboration enhances the efficacy of projects. - Community issues transcend geographical boundaries, necessitating global engagement. In other words, community issues are global too. I extend my gratitude to Samson Tobiloba Samuel, our Union's esteemed President @Simran Kaur of the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), Dr. Aderonke Ajav, the current director of JAJA at the University of Ibadan, Nathaniel Owolawi , and Emmanuel Chinecherem Nwankwo for their invaluable insights and contributions during the meeting. Your diverse perspectives enriched the learning experience for all participants. Decisions emanating from this gathering have already spurred progressive actions. It is fitting that my first post here reflects this. I look forward to sharing more experiences in the future.
