POWERful Women
Non-profit Organization Management
PfW is working for greater representation of women at the top of the UK's energy industry.
About us
Chaired by Katie Jackson, and based at the Energy Institute as project partner, POWERful Women (PfW) is working for a diverse, inclusive and gender-balanced energy industry in the UK. The energy sector is tackling a wide range of important issues – from energy security and affordability to building a more sustainable low carbon future. Because industry competitiveness relies on being able to attract and retain a diverse pool of talent capable of bringing fresh perspectives, PfW believes much stronger female representation is needed at the top tables. By bringing together a mix of industry, academic and political leaders – spanning a wide range of technology sectors, services, roles and viewpoints in the industry – we work to support and encourage energy companies to attract and cultivate female talent and appoint more women to senior roles as part of building stronger businesses, adapting to changing markets and engaging better with consumers. Our "40 by 30" goals are for women to occupyat least 40% of middle management and leadership roles in the UK energy sector by 2030. To achieve this we SUPPORT, CHALLENGE and CONNECT. Find out more about our work by visiting our website, subscribing to our newsletter or getting in touch.

We were pleased to take the gender equality message to #COP29 today, to show that better diversity, equity and inclusion is central to a just and inclusive clean energy transition that leaves no-one behind. On the UK Pavilion this morning, in partnership with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, our Board Member Nick Wayth CEng FEI FIMechE (CEO Energy Institute) spoke about "Achieving a STEP change in gender equality for a successful energy transition" ⚡️ Inspiring fellow speakers were Rt Hon Anneliese Dodds MP (keynote), Debbie Palmer (Director, Energy, Climate and Environment, FCDO), Sophie Westlake, Deputy Director, IEU DESNZ, Evangelos Pastras CEng MICE MBA ACGI, Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition Youth Action group, and Rachel McEwen, Chief Sustainability Officer, SSE plc "Climate policy responses themselves can have unintended negative gender-based impacts. If just transition policies are not in place, occupational gender stereotypes are likely to persist even in the emerging green economy, preventing women from benefitting from the new jobs created." - Nick Wayth 💡 What are 3 actions that can achieve a step change? 1️⃣ be bolder with ambitions: adopt targets and report data to closely monitor progress 2️⃣ be open to learning and collaboration 3️⃣ engage the majority to show that better DEI benefits everyone, while giving greater visibility to women having an impact in the sector 📽️ The recording from this morning's session is now live here: https://lnkd.in/eXXhF5mi Our thanks to Nick Wayth CEng FEI FIMechE for your powerful advocacy, to the UK government for partnering with us on this event and to Alison Flower (FCDO), Tania Kumar CBI (Confederation of British Industry) and Julie Evans (DESNZ). #COP29Azerbaijan #climateaction #diversityequityandinclusion #DEI #womeninenergy

Our Young Professional Board Member Ola Balbaa closes #PfWConf 2024 with some reflections & key takeaways "Carry forward the momentum we gained today, commit to being the change you want to be... Work to appoint, develop and retain female talent within [your] organisation. Achieving greater diversity means taking fewer risks, breaking group thinking, and fostering inclusive environments, that complement diversity. Female representation still has a long way to go, so, advocate with passion with and pragmatic curiosity - sponsor, support, and connect"

We are delighted to hear from Minister of State Sarah Jones MP Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Department for Business and Trade, to open our sold out Annual Conference today. "To be here in such a diverse room makes a big difference to how confident I feel that we can all make the progress that we want to see." But knowing that the energy sector as a whole has poor female representation, she made a commitment to improving gender diversity: "I am personally motivated to do something about this, with collaboration between industry and government... the energy transition and growth of the economy are foundational aims of the government and equality has to be at the core. The net zero transition is a national mission, creating thousands of jobs across the country. It's a truly exciting time to work in industry." We're looking forward to finding out more on the government's plans on skills and equality. Our thanks to the Minister for joining us. #PfWConf #DEI #netzero #jobs #skills
