🚀 New Publication Alert! 🌿📘 I'm excited to share my latest open-access philosophy paper, "The Epistemic Grammar of Bioinspired Technologies: Shifting the Focus from Nature to Scientific Practices," published in Technology in Society. In this paper, I philosophically reflect on the biomimetic promise of design—the idea that bioinspired technologies can provide better, more ecological, and less risky technical solutions by imitating natural forms. To explore this, I emphasize the importance of analyzing the grammar of scientific practices to establish the epistemological grounding for biomimetic technology. Drawing on Cassirer, Blumenberg, Wittgenstein, and recent developments in the philosophy of science and technology in practice, I advocate for a shift from ontology to grammar in bioinspired technology. The rates of materials #innovation are intensifying across the globe. From cactus leather and breathable concrete to bacteria-based textiles and lab-grown diamonds, the stage is set for a materials revolution unprecedented in human history. 3. More and more consumers are mindful of what products are made of in a world that seeks more #sustainability and less #toxicity. In this context, consumer-centric insight into matter can benefit consumers, industries, and the society at large. With this article published in the Journal of Consumer Research with Roman Pavlyuchenko, we hope to have lifted the curtain on the very matter-ness of consumption. Excited to announce the publication of my second-ever academic article, "How the Materials of Objects Shape Consumption: an Affordance Theory Perspective," in the Journal of Consumer Research. Materials are the very stuff that things are made of. Yet, we hardly notice or talk about them. However, if you ever burned your Teflon-coated frying pan or put a cashmere sweater on a wrong setting (as some of our informants did!), you know that materials can make or break your day. Together with Delphine DION, we explore the fascinating world of materials and how they shape our daily experiences around objects big and small. We find that materials lie at the heart of object affordances, or action (im)possibilities with and around objects. We also explain how consumers 'dance around' these affordances in a variety of ways, from utterly respectful to downright subversive. And, we theorize Object Affordance Management as a novel way to understand how consumers navigate action (im)possibilities.
