Congratulations to PEA's 2024 Green Business of the Year Award Winners, Village Fabric Shop! We were so excited to award founders Nicole and Kelsey with this award at our 2024 Annual Party because they are doing some truly amazing things to reduce waste in our community. Village Fabric Shop believes in Ecological Responsibility, and one way they show that is through their innovative reuse space. Here's what they say about it ➡️ "One the most sustainable ways to craft is to reuse materials. The textile industry is the second largest polluter on the planet, and our reuse space helps keep usable materials out of the landfill, and provides affordable, sustainable options for artists, makers, sewists, or anyone looking to create! " It's super easy to help fill the reuse shop and divert waste from your home! All you have to do is drop off your overstock, unloved, excess stash of fabrics to the shop. And, you get store credit in exchange if you want! Just check to make sure your donation is on the list of what's currently being accepted. In addition to the reuse space, Village Fabric Shop is one of a few Winston-Salem businesses committed to completing a rigorous sustainability scorecard required of our Green Business Network members. If you want to learn more about them or their mission, visit them online or simply stop by and say hello! #winstonsalem #greenbusiness #sustainability

In 2020, OLS made a huge change. We went from only making green to being green. One massive project in 2018 started us down the sustainability road. Here’s the story: A client came to us with an urgent need: They needed one million square feet decommissioned - with a truly short lead time and a very tight completion date. Because of the timing, we didn’t have the luxury of treating furniture like furniture. Even though some of the furniture and fixtures were in good shape, way too much ended up in a landfill. We don’t want to fill dumpsters. So, we began refining our system for sales, donations, and recycling. I’m not going to lie: this has not been easy to implement and reproduce. However, more and more clients were measuring the disposition of assets. How could we become better stewards of the environment and help our clients tell a story about sustainability? In 2020 we made a concerted effort to make Zero Landfill our #1 priority. And we did. What does your company do to be more sustainable and gentler on our environment? #sustainability #decommissioning #officemove #movingoffices #businessrelocation #officerelocation #corporatemoving #commercialrelocation #officetransition #workspacetransition #zerolandfill #wastetoenergy

According to government and industry reports, events generate an average of 2.5 pounds of waste per person, per day. At Katalyst, we're committed to changing this narrative by leveraging a thoughtful, holistic approach to minimize waste, emissions and carbon footprint. For our clients that prioritize sustainability, we now offer a "Sustainability Option" uniquely focused on the following efforts: • Intentional use of recycled and reusable materials and supplies • Coordination of pick-up/delivery of unused food to local shelters, emergency personnel and food pantries (pending state guidelines) • Use of eco-friendly inks, substrates and printing methods • Post-event composting of plant/floral decor • Use of locally grown and sustainably sourced ingredients, materials, floral and decor elements, etc. to minimize trucking and emissions • Repurposing of hardware decor elements • Donation of leftover event supplies to local non-profit organizations • Use of local makers and artists to minimize supply chain impact and support investment in local economies. Together, we can make our industry more sustainable. . . . #EarthDay #announcement #sustainability #sustainabilitypackage #sustainableevents #sustainableservices #eventproduction #liveevents

Happy Recycling Week!! As part of my role at Independent Hardware Group, reducing waste and supporting a circular economy is a key focus, and in honour of Recycling Week, I’m excited to share a recent win in our business. Together, we successfully diverted 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser with damaged packaging from landfill at one of our IHG distribution centres. About a month ago, we became aware of seven pallets of fertiliser with significantly damaged packaging at our WA distribution centre. Due to the packaging this product was unable to be sold through our store network, and originally it was destined for landfill. The situation crossed my desk and I immediately started reaching out to various environmental organisations to find a home for this valuable product. Greening Australia responded to the call, and together we were able to coordinate a donation to their seed farm in Coorow, WA. This 6.7 tonnes of fertiliser will serve to support native seed production and further the incredible work that Greening Australia do to restore Australia’s landscapes and protect biodiversity. This is just one small way we at IHG contribute to creating a sustainable future and give back to our community. It was truly rewarding to be part of this project, working alongside like-minded people who were willing to think creatively and collaborate to reduce waste. I also want to recognize the dedication of my IHG colleagues in the Inventory and DC teams who went above and beyond to make this donation happen. I wanted to share this story as it is a good reminder that the circular economy goes beyond what you put in which bin. Moving towards a circular future will take determination, collaboration, innovative problem solving. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐨: 𝐄𝐜𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 🌱 Are you finding it tough to part ways with items because of environmental worries? You're not alone! Many of us grapple with this dilemma. It's understandable – we want to minimise waste and be eco-conscious, but holding onto things we don't love, need, or use only clutters our space and our minds. 🏠 Letting go can feel like a daunting task, especially when we're concerned about contributing to landfill sites. However, when we hoard items out of environmental guilt, our homes inadvertently become mini-landfill sites. 😬 So here are a few tips on how to break free from this cycle while still honouring our commitment to the planet. 🌍 1️⃣ Donate or Sell: Pass along items that are still usable to someone who will love them as much as you once did. Remember, one person's trash is another's treasure! Consider donating them to local charities or community centers that accept donations. This extends the lifespan of the item and reduces waste. 2️⃣ Upcycling and Repurposing: Get creative! Turn old clothing into reusable bags or quilts, transform teapots into planters, or use glass jars as storage containers. 3️⃣ Host a Swap Party: Gather friends or neighbors for a swap event. Everyone brings items they no longer need and exchanges them. This is a fun, sustainable way to refresh your belongings. 4️⃣ Mindful Disposal: When you truly need to dispose of an item, do it mindfully. Separate recyclables, hazardous materials, and non-recyclables. Glass, paper, plastic – you name it, there's likely a recycling option for it. Hazardous or non-recyclable items need special handling. Look into local disposal options to ensure these items are safely and responsibly managed. And most importantly: 5️⃣ 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠: Consider the environmental impact of your possessions when making future purchasing decisions. Buy items intentionally and avoid impulsive purchases. Opt for quality over quantity and choose items that align with your values and serve a purpose. Remember, every small step counts toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Make conscious choices that benefit both ourselves and the planet. Remember, it's okay to let go – your space and mind will thank you for it. #Decluttering #Sustainability #MindfulLiving #EnvironmentalAwareness #KonMariMethod

This is recycling perfection. If you are in the industry, then please comment or like, so that Aylesbury Wombles get the appreciation, celebration and recognition that they deserve. #recycling #sustainability #wastemanagement Aylesbury Wombles are a registered charity that litter pick across Aylesbury, set up in 2019. Their strapline is “It’s not our rubbish … but it is our town”. Yesterday was the towns soapbox derby, run by Aylesbury Town Council and the Wombles set up this most fantastic array of bins: · Dry Mixed Recycling – clearly labelled for paper, plastic, cardboard and glass · Food Waste · Paper coffee cups, with a side bin for lids · Can – kept separate because they keep and sell these to fund equipment. So far they have collected over 5 tonnes of cans to trade. · Soft Plastics – which is really rare to see · General Waste They even had volunteers by the bins all day to ensure that people knew what to put where, and above and beyond that, unbelievably – at the end of the day they were going through the other permanent bins in the park, and were taking out the valuable recycling items that others had just disposed of. This proves that recycling can work and it is the dedication of people, combined with the right infrastructure (mainly provided by Grundon Waste Management Ltd in this case), that can make it work brilliantly. My thanks go out to everyone at Aylesbury Wombles – they are a fantastic group of people and I am in awe of them. #volunteer #recyclingworks #recyclingmatters

It's National Recycling Week! I'm not sure if there is a National Reduce week or a National Reuse week, but all of these should go hand in hand - The 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Everyone will have their own view on what the 3 R's mean to them and as a whole, I think people are getting more conscientious. I had an electrician fixing my thermostat yesterday and we got talking about shirts of all things as he noticed one of my fancy shirts hanging up. We then got on to the subject of charity shops and how we both like to donate some of our own possessions as well as purchase the odd item from time to time. Sometimes when he does electrical jobs, such as changing light fittings at more well off 'Gaffs', he said they are in such good condition, that he gives them away to other people who can make use of them. All simple everyday actions that Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. As well as individuals, companies can and should be doing the same. When you make that next call for some branded merchandise we can discuss the wide range of sustainable products that are available to you. To save you time looking on Google, Firefox, Bing, the Yellow pages or even an atlas, I have included my number below. It would be interesting to know how you concentrate your efforts towards the 3 R's Enjoy recycling for the rest of the week. Found a lost sock? Fear not! 95% of used textiles can be recycled. Our BYU Advertising capstone project was to use ads to tackle a problem close to our hearts. Our choice? Textile waste. In a throwaway culture, an overflowing closet problem results in large amounts of waste. Today, the average consumer buys approximately twice as many clothing items as in 2010 but keeps them for about half as long, with only 15% being recycled. As a nonprofit thrift store and donation center, Deseret Industries embodies our mission of promoting responsible consumption, making them the perfect brand for our project. We wanted to create something that wasn't just entertaining, but a call to action for sustainability. We can help keep textiles from sitting in landfills for as long as 200 years. So next time you're tempted to throw out old clothes, think again. Together, we can make a difference—one sock at a time! Copywriter/Director: Spencer Nelson
