You know when I meet students for career counselling☀ I ask them why do you want to do law? ⏰ Is it really your calling? 🏹 I have found students who are such good creative heads Some are so good at marketing 🎾 Some make good content 🤺 Some have a strong entrepreneurial side. 🎯 They are pursuing now both law and their passion! We have identified how both can go hand in hand🔖 Cause 3 of the mentees are now students and also doing their thing🛼 from legal designing, to marketing and content 🥏 They are understanding it's not about just doing what everyone else is. This is a career assessment designed to evaluate your potential to excel as a lawyer. I scored 17/20, which makes me perfect for the job. It is fortunate since the law was my backup career. Are you confident in your ability to thrive in this position?

When you don't have a career plan, you will fall for anything and this will have a negative effect on your career progression. Recently, I gave a legal advice to the CEO of a company and I said, if you succumb to the offer to sell the company intellectual property, you've sold what is supposed to be a lifetime investment. The truth is, it's not all career plans that get materialised easily but with patience and time, they will be achieved. So, don't give up on your career plans, keep working on them. One day, you will see that you are living in the reality of your career dreams. #WCW #legaladvice #lawyer

One thing I enjoy most about being mid-career is the opportunity to support the next generation of lawyers. I’ve been reflecting on their great questions about career development, especially being at a career crossroads. It made me realize that a lot of my responses aren't the ones I heard most often at their stage. Sharing a few of them here in case this encourages someone early in their legal career journey! Will also share others. 1. There isn’t a moment when you’ll have your career completely figured out. Hopefully, realizing this will save you some agony along the way! Know that you don’t have to get everything right from the start to have a successful career. And, there isn’t a single recipe for success. Yes, some paths are easier than others. You’ll be told about “ideal” career decisions – e.g., “the sweet spot” to make “x” move or take “y” position. The admonishment to “never” have a gap in your resume, or face doom. But your career happens along with the rest of your life, and there are times when the preferred path won’t be feasible for you based on professional or personal reasons – or may not be what you want. This doesn’t automatically relegate you to a failed career. I’ve found that some of the most interesting – and successful – people I’ve encountered in the legal profession didn’t have the most predictable or favored career path. The possibilities and surprises are also what will make your legal career (and life) an adventure! 2. Know your values (including your beliefs and priorities) and consider them in your career choices. This may seem obvious, but, in practice, it’s easy in a profession involving grind and grit to forget this. I’ve heard many lawyers repeat that, at some point, they lost themselves in their work. Consistently reminding yourself what you value most in life will help you make conscious career choices aligned with those values, and minimize regrets later. What you value will also likely change at least in some ways as you go through different stages of life, so don’t forget to regularly re-evaluate what matters to you, and how this should impact your career. 3. Maximize the job you have right now, but put it in the right perspective. Individual career opportunities are more like friends with benefits than a marriage. The two of you are obligated to each other only as long as it works for both of you. That could mean years, or months. That doesn’t mean you don’t take a job seriously (slacking off obviously doesn’t help either of you), but it does mean that you should go into a role with goals that you periodically assess in light of the organizational environment. This way, you’ll have a better sense of when it’s time to move on to further your career (or retire), and have a better shot of doing so amicably. To you newer lawyers, welcome! Congratulations on getting here, and best wishes on your career adventure! I hope we as a legal profession proactively ensure you’re championed along the way.
