There are currently 870 teacher vacancies in the state of Mississippi, and it’s likely that not all openings have been reported to the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). This highlights the importance of innovative strategies to attract and retain high-quality educators. As alarming as the vacancy numbers can be, it’s an opportunity for us to come together to support and listen to our teachers. Districts seeking feedback from educators who are not returning should consider asking: ✅In what areas did we excel? ✅Where did we fall short? ✅What steps can we take to improve? ✅How could we have better supported you as a partner in education? Many school districts struggle to hire special education professionals. Some MAJOR highlights from Texas's recently published "A Ready Texas" Report. This report highlighted the gaps in college & career readiness that are plaguing Texas school districts. Here are some direct quotes that I need to share: "The number of Texas school counselors and whether they have time to meet students one-on-one depends on each school’s finances and priorities." 😵 "Hiring more counselors is not enough to help students – additional resources and positions are required to assist counselors to meet all student needs." 👫 "Those who enter the school counseling profession often are not from the same demographic backgrounds of the students they serve." 👩🏫 "Counselors saw the potential for increased college preparedness [for underrepresented students] if the school district had more resources that could be used to create the time to help students and families learn more about college opportunities" 👨👩👧👧 People often ask me why we are building College Contact. When I worked on this dataset, I was surprised by the rise in departure in Asheville City schools. However, I remembered that, in NC, data is offset when reported, and much of the attrition we are seeing in teachers from COVID has just recently been reported. While I was able to aggregate data to make this heatmap in #Tableau, there is even more data sourced in the State of the Teaching Profession dashboard from DPI: https://lnkd.in/e-krgbrx
Teacher departure rates (the percentage of teachers who leave teaching in North Carolina or change districts) in K-12 traditional public school districts for the 2022-23 school year ranged from 6% in Camden County Schools to 31% in Asheville City Schools. #NCEd
