I've just published Episode 59 of the Pellicle Podcast, and I'm really proud of it, so let me give you a quick pitch as to why I think it's worth 25 minutes of your time: Last March I was in Liverpool for Beer X, the trade show from SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers and Associates and I wandered the floor, microphone in hand, looking for people to answer just two questions. The first of these was a more obvious "what's the biggest challenge your brewery or business is facing at the moment?" A lot of familiar answers came up: routes to market, cost of raw materials, cashflow, but together they started to build up a bigger overall picture of why it's such a tough market for small, independent breweries at the moment. To flip that on its head, I then asked "what's the one thing in beer you're feeling positive about at the moment?" It might surprise you to hear this, but the answers I got were as varied as they were honest. Together, they tell a story of an industry that is not without its struggles, but one that is still dedicated towards the products they make, and the people who drink and enjoy them. There's still plenty of optimism out there, and for me this paints a picture of an industry that's thinking beyond merely being in survival mode as they continue to weather the hardships the past couple of years have thrown at them. This is all cut together in a relative short, digestible, narrative style documentary, hopefully giving you as much food for thought as it does listening enjoyment. If you've not listened to the podcast before this is the perfect place to start, and if you're a regular listener I hope you appreciate the extra hours that I've put into cutting this one together. You can listen to it directly from the Pellicle website via the link below, and wherever you stream podcasts, including Apple and Spotify.
