KickStart is building sustainable livelihoods through climate-resilient dairy farming in Rwanda. Yesterday I spent the day in Rwamagana District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, meeting with government officials, community leaders and visiting smallholder dairy farmers on their farms. We are exploring ways of how we can improve the living standards of smallholder dairy farmers - those who live on small plots of land of less than a hectare and raising only one dairy cattle. We want to support these communities to build sustainable livelihoods by strengthening climate-resilient dairy farming, food security and inclusive market systems that puts this segment of farmers at the center of government policy on food and income security and its strategic plan for agriculture transformation. By talking to and listening to these farmers, we’ve noticed the potential to revatilze dairy farming and boost milk production through provision of sustainable water supply interventions. Join us to walk this journey with these farmers!

**Campaign just launched asking for Universal Basic Income (UBI) for UK farmers** This would help plug the gap between CAP payments and post-Brexit sustainable farming scheme (SFI) which has experienced many delays, and suffers from low uptake. SFI was not intended to replace CAP so it seems reasonable that other measures will be needed to ensure viable farm businesses. It's great that we're rewarding farmers for delivering environmental outcomes, but what about nutrition? Combining SFI with other measures aimed at increasing production of healthy food e.g., fruit and veg would be useful, given the potential for greater domestic production highlighted by The Food Foundation , Rosemary Collier , Rosemary Green and many others working on this issue. Campaigners say that UBI would make farming more attractive and feasible for new entrants, and increase farmers' willingness to take risks and experiment with sustainable farming methods. It's important to introduce the right incentives to support this vital sector to flourish, alongside improving existing measures - increasing uptake of SFI will be critical too. The EU communication this week 'A shared prospect for farming and food in Europe' focusses on the need to transition to a much more sustainable food and farming system. The report includes a series of joint non-binding recommendations agreed upon by various agri-food stakeholders, including farming representatives and NGOs. Whilst welcome, I remain sceptical as words are easier than actions. These recommendations must now be implemented through the next CAP and through various Farm to Fork related legislation. Highlights include👇 👩🌾Income support for active farmers who need it most & moving away from area-based payments 💶A Temporary Just Transition Fund should be established outside the CAP to complement support for the sector’s swift sustainability transition. 🥕More support for plant-based protein diets: A call for an “EU Action Plan for Plant-Based Foods” to be developed by the EC by 2026. These include calls for a reduction in meat consumption, potentially through tax incentives and labelling, as well as more support for farmers to help them move away from livestock farming. 🌳Substantial increase of the budget share in favour of payments for ecosystem services To view the summary report 👉🏾https://lnkd.in/egT_8F_F #sustainability #agriculture #EU #climatechange #foodsystems #farming #F2F https://lnkd.in/eHzSask2

We conducted a comprehensive national survey to gain deeper insights into dairy farmers' perspectives and readiness to transition with and without government support. Utilising KG2, Australia's largest independent agriculture market research company, the survey involved 147 dairy farmers. The findings reflect the realities of farming in Australia; they highlighted and reaffirmed farmers' challenges, shedding light on the industry's inherent unsustainability. The journey toward a sustainable future requires a paradigm shift involving acknowledging the challenges and actively seeking and championing alternatives. We must rally behind our farmers and provide them with the tools, resources, and support for a just and gracious exit from the dairy industry. #farmtransitionsaustralia #farmtransition #australiandairyindustry #justtransition https://lnkd.in/g5y5vgJz

“What matters for profitable dairy farming is...What you feed & How you feed to your dairy animals?” Management of feeding practices plays a important part in dairy farming business along with the management of feed resources like green fodder, dry fodder & concentrate feed. Key observations while working with small scale stakeholders is that they are counting the prices & losses of feed resources but not counting on nutrient losses health losses & feed wastage due to spoilage. So, feeding the animals right way is plays crucial role for maintaining profitability of dairy farm by saving of nutrient losses & health conditions & ultimately the production losses. Hence, farmers should avoid giving feed resources soaked in water, avoid giving spoiled feed & raw materials, adopt proper dry & green fodder conservation practices & save on the cost effectively, sustainable dairy farming & add on profit margines. #Dairyfarming#sustaininability#Feeding practices

Dear altruists, Are you eager for some amazing updates? So are we, which is why Inclusive Agricultural Growth in Coastal Zone has come up with its second thematic campaign on Integrated farming System. In order to increase production, efficiency, and resource use, Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) refers to a sustainable agricultural method that incorporates several agricultural operations and components. These systems seek to increase output while reducing harmful environmental effects. The main elements of any IFS are crops, livestock, and trees. Many Transformations of the agricultural systems have been occurring in Bangladesh's coastal region. The sustainability of farming techniques is crucial for the long-term livelihood, food security, and adaptability of the coastal population. People in coastal zones need to raise awareness about using their fallow homestead to practice an Integrated Farming System due to the paucity of arable land. This strategy tries to lessen micronutrient deficits while enhancing family food security. Also, raising small livestock close to the home together with cultivating crops will be able to support the household financially. In this region, ongoing land degradation puts family food security in jeopardy. Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) may be the answer to halt land degradation and restore production. The IFS can eliminate all these restrictions by not only resolving the majority of the economic and even ecological issues that are now present, but also by supplying the necessary production tools, such as fuel, fertilizer, and feed, in addition to greatly boosting output. #inclusive_agricultural_development #empowering_coastal_belt_farmers #iagcz

Both farmers and grasslands in Wales are under huge pressures, something the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) is trying to address. If done well, the SFS has a brilliant opportunity to benefit farming, nature and biodiversity in Wales. We support the ambitions of the scheme, but recognise that it is not perfect. It has to work practically for farmers and nature – and farmers must be paid properly for this important work. The scheme requires 10% of land to be habitat, which includes species-rich grassland. This special habitat can be part of livestock farming, whilst locking in carbon and supporting biodiversity. We believe farmers can have productive farmland and make space for nature at the same time – it doesn’t need to be either/or. We understand why this is a difficult time for farmers, with significant changes and uncertainties. And we will continue to work with farmers to help them manage land which is productive and at the same time delivers for nature and climate. As the SFS consultation comes to a close in one day (7th March), we urge farmers to research the proposals and respond. Respond here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDy4Q2Hf In the 20th century, an estimated 90% of Wales’ lowland semi-natural grassland was lost. It is crucial that we manage and restore these species-rich grasslands so they can help tackle climate change, boost biodiversity and support sustainable food production. That’s why we’re calling for the Welsh government to take a strategic approach to grasslands. This means supporting farmers and land managers, through public and private funding opportunities, in low-carbon, nature-friendly farming.
