From the project’s inception 4 years ago, “America” has always made far more sense from both a social and economical perspective. Economically: It’s the literal capital of capitalism. Socially: When compared to African Americans (and other minority groups), Black Britons have long been accused of possessing a “crabs in a bucket” attitude to supporting each other, frequenting reminders that “not all skinfolk are kinfolk” and, pejoratively, being deserving of the socioeconomic problems they face as a community - indicitments made by members of the community themselves. Ourselves. I don’t completely agree with the above nor do I want to delve into reasons behind why this may be the case. Instead, I’m betting against it. But at the same time, one can only keep their fist in the air for so long as an act of almost solitary defiance before either fatigue or apathetic ambivalence sets in. From a personal perspective, of all the negative and positive…ly soul crushingly disappointing experiences we’ve faced over the past 4 years that have forced our hand into an earlier than scheduled geographical pivot, a much needed chance encounter with my new favourite VC Toyosi Ogedengbe on a train journey home reminded me of our raison d'être when he asked, “What’s stopping you from just going to America now?” As poignant a question as it was, this isn’t to say this move will be easy. But without any hyperbole whatsover, a ten minute Uber ride last month in LA, on average, proved more rewarding to us than 10 minute Zoom calls in UK this month. Launching a startup is a risk. Doubling the workload in a foreign market is a risk. Building in public, full time - sans salary - whilst navigating a myriad of personal and professional trauma is actually nonsensical when you really, really deep it. But as eternal optimists, which founders have to be, my brothers and I will continue to keep our fists in the air. 🟢⚫️

After spending 1.5 year building Staq, we failed. Why? Because we're not the right team to solve the problem. Yes - building financial API for SMEs sounds exciting. But we didn't have domain expertise in the industry, and we didn't have the right network to leverage on. Because of that, we spent lots of time: - conducting user interviews - understanding the problem - validating our hypothesis - iterating our product ... and finally - we ran out of cash. By the time we knew it, it was too late. We were dying. Our runway was left with 2 months. And the rest is history. Yes - we failed. But we learned a valuable lesson. We learned that a problem is only a good problem to solve if you are the right team to solve it. This time last year I was completely oblivious to the fact I was setting myself up for a hellish Autumn. In yesterday's edition of Trifecta, Matthew Briggs said something about that really struck a chord: "Partnership is a marathon, not a sprint, so pace yourself and make what you do count." The exact same thing can be said about BD and business owning. In May/June last year, I was sprinting towards the summer break, overflowing with work and without a care in the (business) world. I returned in September fresh-faced to zero work lined up and immediately headed into panic mode. BD in the legal world is a long game; it can take 3-6 months for me to convert a new client, so the pace I was operating at felt like lightspeed if I was going to stay afloat. It also felt (and is) unsustainable and burnout-inducing. This is a much-needed reminder: if you pace your BD, you will always have a pipeline to fall back on. With 6 weeks left before summer (hopefully) kicks in, if you haven't already, ask yourself: where is my work coming from later in the year? Not sure? Long post, but stick with me; it might just brighten your day! 😀 Amma and Daddy dropped by the office the other day. Just over a year ago, they had inaugurated this space. Back then, we had only one employee and a handful of clients. Today, at FinStackk , we're a team of about 20 people managing over 150 clients, all working towards a common dream: to become the go-to solution for all finance and compliance needs of US businesses, powered by our services and technology. What was once Satya Yeruva 's idea has now become a shared vision among enthusiasts from different backgrounds, each contributing to realizing our collective dream. It wouldn't be fair to single out any one person because everyone on the team continues to play their part in delivering the best for the long-term vision. However, I must highlight one person who has been our biggest cheerleader throughout – Amma. Just look at her beaming smile in the picture! Why, you ask? Not just because she's my mother, but also because she's been the strongest supporter and cheerleader for us. I vividly recall her presence in the living room discussion when Satya shared the idea of FinStackk (which didn't even have a name back then) with me. Almost immediately, she exclaimed, 'You guys should do it! I may not be educated enough to understand what it is, but I know Satya, and I know you. Because you believe in the idea and people on this journey, you should do it.' From that day, she's been there every step of the way – from our first office opening to occasionally offering her savings to support us (because she thinks startups keep running out of money 😂) to spreading the word about our hiring needs and sending profiles, even to this day. She even sends pickles and snacks for the team because I mentioned they weren't enjoying the catering food. On her second and only visit after we opened the office, she brought prasad for the team because, as she says, prayers and blessings are important. One of the most gratifying feelings for me is seeing her happiness and pride in our growth. While much of this might seem emotional, it has practically helped us a lot in our journey. Emotions are real and practical. At FinStackk , we've come a long way. Our tech products are ready and will be launching soon (follow our page FinStackk for updates). We're also expanding our team (hiring for multiple roles, DM me or write to [email protected]) and moving into a new, bigger office space. Among all these developments, we want to take a moment to thank Amma and acknowledge all the amazing things she does for us. She's a fan of C-suite roles and often asks me about becoming a CEO 😀 We wish to gift her such a role and a special place in our new office where she can continue to inspire us.
