March is the time to celebrate B Corp organizations! The B Corp movement has been growing steadily since 2007. Businesses attaining B Corp certification have grown from 110 to 8,298 in 2024. Many people now understand that businesses bearing the B Corp certified badge are those that use business as a force for good. These are businesses that have gone through a rigorous assessment to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. According to studies done by the B Lab, companies with B Corp certification have grown at much higher rates than non B Corps in the same sector. Consumers want brands to address important social issues — many of them are willing to spend more for goods that have a positive impact. In addition, B Corps have reported that prospective employees are attracted to applying for jobs specifically because their B Corp certification. If you look at our recent posts analyzing the different generations, you will see that Gen Alpha, Gen Z, and Gen Y are all motivated to purchase products from companies touting great corporate social responsibility efforts, so it's no surprise that the movement has been growing steadily. B-movies, B-sides, B-list actors... being 'B' isn't usually something to aim for. But Nile is proud to be 'B' in one respect. Back in 2020, we decided 'knowing' we were good wasn't good enough. We wanted a framework to help us do right by our clients, our people and the planet. That's why we chose to become a B Corp. This month is B Corp Month, so we thought we'd share a bit about what this journey has meant for Nile. Qualifying as a B Corp means exceeding 80 points across five impact areas: governance, colleagues, clients, environment and community. We hit 90 points in 2021, and 107.5 last year. Next time, we want to hit or exceed 110. What’s changed? Everything and nothing. We've always been about doing good, but now we can quantify it and do even better. B Corp has given us a framework that lets us aim for (and hit) clear targets. It's helped us embed environmental and social purpose into every decision. Whether that's refitting our office, improving our staff policies, or working with purpose-driven clients, every choice we make as a business is now through a lens of sustainability, inclusivity and progress. The Professional Gatekeepers Masterclass, hosted by Stellenbosch Business Institute at The Campus in Bryanston, attracted a diverse group of gatekeepers from various sectors across South Africa, including Banking & Financial, Agri Business, Consumer & Retail, FMCG, Education, and Logistics & Freight. Focused on the theme of personal branding, the masterclass delved into the implications of personal identity, differentiation, and representation for gatekeepers. Key topics included the significance of storytelling in personal branding, encouraging participants to engage in self-reflection. Practical activities such as crafting Mission Statements, defining Unique Value Propositions, and exploring Authenticity were conducted, culminating in the design of personalized Vision Boards. Reflective discussions underscored the importance of acknowledging personal impositions and recognizing that a brand is deeply rooted in one's values and experiences. DEIB Week: Not a One-Off Event But a Year-Round Commitment This week was DEIB Week at DHL and DHL Consulting. We held a series of enriching activities and discussions making it a great opportunity to pause, reflect, celebrate, and gain renewed energy to drive our DEIB initiatives forward. But it doesn't end there.   While designated weeks like DEIB Week are crucial for raising awareness and sparking important conversations, it is vital to remember that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are not just initiatives to be spotlighted intermittently. They are foundational principles that must be woven into the fabric of our daily operations and organizational culture.   Here’s why year-round dedication to DEIB is essential:   Sustained Progress: Real change takes time. Continuous efforts ensure that DEIB goals are not merely aspirational but are systematically pursued and achieved. Regular training, policy reviews, and engagement activities keep the momentum going.   Inclusive Culture: Building a truly inclusive environment is an ongoing process. It requires constant nurturing to ensure that all team members feel valued, heard, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work every day.   Innovation and Growth: Diverse teams bring varied perspectives that drive innovation and creative problem-solving. I AM IMPRESSED - YOU CAUGHT MY ATTENTION Team Talent Trekkers from Nanyang Polytechnic was selected to be mentored by SFS for the finals for Supply Chain Challenge++ 2024. I gave them a problem statement, but not to solve a company specific challenge but an industry wide. In short, how to attract, retain and groom young talents (Gen Z). The young talents in SFS were roped in to support the team. I am impressed that in 48 days and still have to attend exams, schools and other matters they managed to come up with an outstanding solution. They collabrated and surveyed over 1000 students across 14 Institute of Higher Learning and managed to get 510 participants asking 5 basic questions. Basically is salary more important or career progression. They also introduced micro learning to shorten the learning curve of new employees and proven to me that it works. On the day of the finals they were flawless in their presentation including responding very well to the difficult questions from the judges. I will implement the solutions from Talent Trekkers across all SFS offices and partner networks. Thank you for for showing me a different perspective when employing Gen Z with the survey questions. With that, I will retire from participating in Supply Chain Challenge (Champions 2022 and 2023) instead I will continue to groom young talents across all industries to join the logistics industry and I won't be alone in this journey. Thank you Talent Trekkers and the Young Talents of SFS, you have showed me that you are willing to collabrate and work together to come up with a workable solution to solve an industry challenge and you are spot on! And just like that my PH trip is over and now back in SG…. Here’s the highlights of my productive trip and key learnings: 1. Knowledge Management is a broad topic which encompasses a lot of things. I am amazed how organisations no matter what the size is can benefit sustainably. KM when in place can increase #efficiency, #consistency and #productivity therefore #profitability. Appreciate Rajesh Dhillon for his passion and generous sharing during the KM clinic & mini workshop. 2. The #Impact and #ROI of any initiatives is in the awareness, continuous learning and improvement. It’s about creating the culture that ensures that #people are prioritised but not forgetting that the right #processes are in place and that we leverage on #technology. 3. Grateful for my friend, Claudine Villareal’s reminder to focus on what gives me most return in my business and narrow down on my niche. 4. Appreciate my friend and sponsor, Michael Aguirre who told me that it’s ok to ask for money so I can continue to create events and valuable contents, since to do so, I need time, effort and money for tools & platforms. 5.
