I had the honor of moderating a panel of three hospital Presidents/CEOs at Laudio's inaugural Leadership Innovation Exchange (LINE) conference. We discussed “Future-Proofing Health Systems” and what is required for the next generation of hospital leadership to effectively manage the healthcare workforce. We didn’t have a crystal ball, but we had the next best thing -- insights from these three impressive leaders. Quick takes: 💡 Mark Slyter, DSc, FACHE of Dignity Health: High reliability organizations are the way of the future. When implemented correctly, retention is the output and not the goal. 💡 Bill Santulli, FACHE formerly of Advocate Health: When looking for his successors, he looked for leaders who are effective at change management…it’s ultimately all about culture. 💡 Joseph Mitchell of Franciscan Children’s: It took a strong arsenal of leaders who were resilient to complete the integration with Boston Children’s and ultimately to bring attrition down from 35% to 18%. Heard throughout the day were these fascinating tidbits from C-level leaders on what is improving their workforce culture and satisfaction: 🐕 Geisinger: ‘Paws to Reflect’ program that brought in dogs for healthcare workforce, not for patients 🤖 El Camino: Robots for patient wayfinding – an idea that stemmed from their nurses when they saw the robots delivering specimen 💻 Stanford: Being discerning about not automating processes that are terrible, but only the ones that are deserving Hats off to the Russ Richmond, CJ Floros, Emma Smith, Ashley N. and the whole Laudio team on this fantastic LINE-up!

We invited Ann Lee-Karlon, Ami Parekh, Stephanie Wisner, and Amanda Goltz to be speakers at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Healthcare conference because they are: Incredible. Insightful. Leaders. Each holds unique perspective from treatment innovation development and commercialization to care delivery and patient empowerment. It was a pleasure to moderate the session focusing on how Technology can improve Health Equity and how recent developments can democratize information and access to care. Some key takeaways: 🚀Promoting health equity starts from leadership, with diversity beginning at the decision-making level. 💡Technology has tremendous potential to transform healthcare by developing treatment options for underserved populations, improving access to services, and empowering patients to manage their health journeys. 🌟Innovative technology is not enough. To successfully impact healthcare, we need to begin with an innovative and scalable business model. #HealthcareInnovation #HealthEquity #TechInHealthcare #Leadership #Diversity #PatientEmpowerment

Today I had an interesting discussion with a small hospital CEO who asked me what innovation really means. After doing some research, I found that Dr. Clayton Christensen coined the term "disruptive innovation" and identified the skills required for innovation. As hospital and healthcare leaders, we can incorporate some of these skills, such as asking ourselves and our staff why we always do things the same way, observing how things are done, taking risks to try new things, and experimenting with new ideas. However, implementing change and creating a culture of innovation takes work. As healthcare innovators, we should be asking these questions of our clients and staff to drive progress and create positive change. #HealthcareInnovation #DisruptiveInnovation #InnovationSkills #LeadershipSkills

Patient First is the apparent slogan of many healthcare institutions. In an age of rapid change where patients' expectations are impacted by technology and unlimited breakthroughs, patients seldom tolerate mediocrity. Patients growing demands for speedy service, emphasized courtesy, being kept informed and care involvement signal their unwillingness to accept any service that's less than excellent. The internet and reviews are not shielding healthcare institutions from the brutal attacks. So what can be done? 💞💓 Leaders need to have a keen understanding on what fuels patients' expectations. Leaders must be willing to surf the tides of change to create positive patient outcomes. Leaders need to orchestrate conditions to improve patient perceptions and, enhance patient experiences. Why the emphasis on leadership? Leaders are charged with the responsibility of setting a patient-centered culture coupled with securing a positive image for the organization. Everything rises and falls on leadership. 👋👏 #healthcareleadership #changemanagement #patientsatisfaction
