🎧 Nikki, PfL's Head of Research, discusses her approach to beef production with the #ScotlandOutdoorsPodcast on BBC Sounds. 🗣 PfL certified Grampian Graziers uses a variety of methods, such as bale grazing and deferred grazing, to increase biodiversity for the landowner while reducing input costs. The farm's cattle are kept outside all year round and eat nothing but the pasture and hay, with no barley, concentrates, grain, or imported feed. By keeping the cattle moving with low-input farming methods and avoiding overstocking and overgrazing, 116 kilos of carbon are offset for every kilo of beef produced, according to the linear measuring tool. This doesn't even account for the grassland making it much more. We can grow really species rich grassland in the UK, but we've lost 90% of this since the Second World War, pasture-fed farming systems can reverse this trajectory. Grampian Graziers supermarket price match their always sold out beef. Their pasture-fed meat is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which is protective of human health. They are in the process of testing the meat for other nutrient content. #livestockfarming #livestock #cattle #scottishfarming https://lnkd.in/eAd2ixEK

😃 Cattle Egrets The cattle egret and grazing cattle in close association is a classic example of commensalism. The egrets always forage close to where the cattle are grazing because the cattle, as they move, stir up and flush out insects from the vegetation that otherwise might be difficult for the egrets to find and catch. The nest is a small, untidy platform of sticks in a tree or shrub constructed by both parents. Sticks are collected by the male and arranged by the female, and stick-stealing is rife. The clutch size can be one to five eggs, although three or four is most common. 📷 John&Fish
