So, what are the behaviors that we see in Efficient Cattle and the behaviors in the Non-Efficient Cattle? Basically, finding that cow that can do everything she’s supposed to do, but do it with less in her environment. Dr. Jim Sprinkle, Extension Beef Specialist with the University of Idaho is my guest as we talk about their latest research that looks at the grazing behavior of cow/calf pairs on rugged rangeland pastures. What can we glean from that data? But keep in mind, we have been an industry has been chasing weight and high production cattle in previous years, which research is show... are not the most efficient cattle. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #HallandHall #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #grazing #rfi #rangeland #perfectcow

😃 Cattle Egrets The cattle egret and grazing cattle in close association is a classic example of commensalism. The egrets always forage close to where the cattle are grazing because the cattle, as they move, stir up and flush out insects from the vegetation that otherwise might be difficult for the egrets to find and catch. The nest is a small, untidy platform of sticks in a tree or shrub constructed by both parents. Sticks are collected by the male and arranged by the female, and stick-stealing is rife. The clutch size can be one to five eggs, although three or four is most common. 📷 John&Fish

Picture this — It’s July in Bartow County Georgia. By 11:00am the heat is noteworthy and by 2:00pm it’s oppressive. One farmer’s cattle aren’t heat adapted yet, and they’re not eating. Down the road, another farmer’s cattle are crowded beneath a single tree in their pasture, concentrating manure and compaction in a single spot. Anecdotes like these are common, but also reflect a missed opportunity: Beef cattle gain 60% more weight and produce 20% more milk when they have access to tree shade, and dappled shade across a pasture can keep livestock happy while the grass keeps growing. This matters a great deal in places like Georgia where temperatures reach over 80 degrees on 147 days of the year, and over 90 degrees for 47 days per year. ☀️ 🐮 Now, Imagine instead a landscape where cattle graze happily beneath a canopy of trees (silvopasture): A third farmer is out thinning branches while their cattle graze about in dappled shade. The cattle are happier and gaining weight more easily. Meanwhile, the farmer ponders future harvests of fruit, nuts, or timber — finding additional income while supporting their existing operation. 🌳 🐄 Photo: Locust, walnut, and thinned-forest silvopasture, Angus Glen Farm, Watkins Glen, New York.

Here's a quick guide to help you figure it out: 1️⃣ Cattle need around 1.5 to 2 acres per head. 2️⃣ Horses require about 2 acres each for grazing and movement. 3️⃣ The quality of your grazing land is key! Rich soil and healthy grass mean you might need less space, while poor land will require more. 4️⃣ Water sources like ponds or streams can lower the need for additional land, but make sure your animals have enough water in any season. 5️⃣ Rotational grazing allows you to maximize land use by rotating animals between pastures to avoid overgrazing and keep grass healthy. Need help figuring out how much land your dream ranch needs?
